AO Kavala is a Greek sports club based in the northern Greek port city of Kavala . The club, which is mainly known for its soccer team, but also operates volleyball and athletics, was founded in 1965.

history

The club was involved in a soccer scandal uncovered in June 2011, which involved match fixing, illegal betting and other allegations. The owner Stavros Psomiadis and trainer Giannis Papakostas were arrested. After a meeting of the disciplinary committee that lasted several hours, both Kavala and Olympiakos Volos were sentenced to relegation to the second division. On August 10, the Greek Federation announced that the penalties for both clubs had been converted into point deductions of eight (for Volos) and ten points (for Kavala) for the 2011/12 season. Club president Psomiadis was given a life ban and a fine of 90,000 euros. On August 23, however, it was decided by the responsible commission for professional sports that Kavala had to relegate to the fourth division. On November 9, 2011, Psomiadis, who escaped the Greek investigative authorities by escaping, was arrested in Skopje , Macedonia, and taken into custody for extradition .

Stadion

The team plays in the “Anthi Karagianni” stadium, which has 12,500 seats and is named after Anthi Karagianni , who comes from Kavala, who won three silver medals in the 2004 Summer Paralympics .
