Euzebiusz " Ebi " Smolarek [ ɛuˈzɛbʲuʃ smɔˈlarɛk ] (born January 9, 1981 in Łódź ) is a former Polish football player and today's coach .

childhood

Euzebiusz Smolarek was born in Łódź in 1981 as the son of professional footballer Włodzimierz Smolarek . His first name is a tribute to the former Portuguese footballer Eusébio . In 1986 the family moved to Frankfurt when Włodzimierz Smolarek signed with Eintracht Frankfurt . When Włodzimierz moved to the Dutch first division club Feyenoord Rotterdam in 1988 , Ebi and his mother followed him to the Netherlands and stayed there after his career ended.

Life

society

Smolarek started playing football in the youth of Spirit Oudekerk ad IJssel . In 1999 he went to the youth of Feyenoord Rotterdam, which was then coached by his father. After a year he got a professional contract. With the professional team, he won the UEFA Cup in 2002 . In the final in his own stadium, his future employer Borussia Dortmund was defeated 3-2; Smolarek only sat on the bench in the final. Shortly before that, it became known that he had tested positive for cannabinol in the doping control in the quarter-finals , for which he was then banned for three months.

Smolarek moved to Borussia Dortmund on loan from Feyenoord during the 2004/05 winter break . Borussia Dortmund signed the striker for the 2005/06 season and gave him a contract that ran until 2009. Borussia Dortmund had signed Nelson Valdez and Alexander Frei for the 2006/07 season , causing Smolarek to lose his regular place at the beginning of the season. However, due to a system change by coach Bert van Marwijk and not least after good performances in the Polish national team (including two goals against Portugal, fourth in the World Cup), he got it back.

In August 2007, Smolarek moved to the Primera División for Racing Santander . Borussia Dortmund had to cede part of the transfer fee to Feyenoord Rotterdam. On his racing debut against FC Barcelona, Smolarek received the red card just 13 minutes after coming on as a substitute . Smolarek played in 34 games (four goals) and finished sixth in the table with Racing Santander. On August 30, 2008, the Bolton Wanderers loaned him for a year ending June 30, 2009 with an option to purchase. For the club he came to twelve missions; the Bolton Wanderers placed at the end of the season in 13th place. A purchase option was not used and Smolarek dissolved his contract with Racing Santander after the 2008/09 season.

On December 14, 2009, he signed a two-and-a-half year contract with the Greek first division club AO Kavala and completed 15 games in the league game, in which he scored three goals. At the end of the season, the club occupied sixth place in the table. On July 26, 2010 Smolarek returned to his native country and signed a two-year contract with the first division club Polonia Warsaw . In 23 league appearances he scored seven goals and with Polonia Warsaw he placed seventh. After a year he moved to Asia for the Qatari club Al-Khor Sports Club . On January 31, 2012 Smolarek returned to the Netherlands and joined the first division club ADO Den Haag , with whom he signed a contract running until the end of the 2011/12 season. For the club he came to twelve missions (three goals) and secured the league with 15th place in the table.

After Smolarek had initially not found a new club, he signed a one-year contract in September 2012 with an option for another year with the Polish first division club Jagiellonia Białystok . He scored four goals in 20 appearances and his club was tenth in the league.

In July 2014, Smolarek ended his career after a year without a club.

National team

On February 13, 2002, he made his debut for the Polish national team in a 4-1 win over Northern Ireland . It was not until two years later that he was appointed to the national team for a second time. On March 31, 2004 he was allowed to play against the selection of the USA . Since then he has been nominated regularly. On September 3, 2005, he scored a goal in a 3-2 win against Austria in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . There he completed all three games for Poland and retired with his team after the group stage; Smolarek failed to score.

In qualifying for Euro 2008 he was the top scorer of his team with nine goals and the team was able to prevail as first in the group A for the finals in Switzerland and Austria. In the penultimate game of qualifying for the European Football Championship in 2008, he secured his country's first participation in a European Championship with two goals for the 2-0 victory of the Polish national team over Belgium . After the failed European Championship, when they were eliminated in the preliminary round with a draw and two defeats, he was nominated as a regular player in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup under Leo Beenhakker . However, when they failed early and the coach was dismissed from the Polish Football Association, Smolarek was no longer considered for the last insignificant games. Even after the failed qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the new national coach Franciszek Smuda did not consider him for the time being.

On September 4, 2010, he played his first game for the national team after a long absence against Ukraine . On November 17, 2010 Smolarek ran in the 3-1 win against Ivory Coast for the last time for the national team.

Coaching career

After the end of his career, Smolarek returned to Feyenoord Rotterdam as a youth coach.

For a while it was rumored that his newborn son was given the first name Messi after the Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi . However, Smolarek made it clear that his son has the Dutch first name Mees.
