The Belgian national football team is the football selection of the Western European state Belgium . The greatest successes of the Belgian team known as the "Red Devils" so far were the Olympic victory in 1920 and third place at the 2018 World Cup .
history
The first official international match took place on May 1, 1904 in front of 1500 spectators in Uccle / Ukkel in the stadium of Racing Club de Bruxelles , in De Ganzenvijver / Stadion du Vivier d'Oie against France and ended 3: 3. The founding of FIFA was suggested between his club secretary Louis Muhlinghaus and the French delegation , which took place on May 21, 1904 in Paris.
The name "Red Devils" comes from 1906 when a football reporter said that the Belgians would play like devils in red jerseys.
The Belgian national team had its first heyday in the early 1920s when it became Olympic champion in Antwerp and also took part in the first World Cup in Uruguay as one of the few European teams. Belgium was only able to build on these successes again in the 1970s and 1980s. At that time, the Belgian team achieved considerable success at world and European championships under players like Jean-Marie Pfaff and Jan Ceulemans . In qualifying for the 1974 World Cup, they failed without conceding a goal in two draws against eventual runner-up Netherlands only because of the worse goal difference.
The team most recently failed in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 European Championship . In qualifying for the Euro 2012 , Belgium met Germany , Turkey , Austria , Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan in Group A , finished third in the group and thus also missed the qualification for this tournament.
After the 2002 World Cup, the Belgian national team began to decline when they missed five consecutive major tournaments, from the 2004 European Championship in Portugal to the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine . Meanwhile, the 2007 U21 European Championship grew into a promising group that qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and came fourth there. After the national coach Georges Leekens, who had been in office since 2010, resigned in the summer of 2012, his assistant coach Marc Wilmots became an interim coach. He was later appointed the new head coach of the Belgian national team. The Belgian national team then qualified as group winners and without a single defeat for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . Part of the success was attributed to Marc Wilmots when he had formed a unit from a previously quarreling team and granted his players freedom, where he also demanded discipline. He also created professional conditions in the Belgian Football Association, with the team being a mix of experienced players and outstanding talents. Some of the players had foreign roots. At the final round in Brazil, the Belgian side met Algeria , Russia and South Korea in the group stage . They won all three games and qualified as group winners for the round of 16, in which the Belgians beat the United States 2-1 after extra time. Belgium was eliminated by Argentina in the quarterfinals . After Belgium qualified for the 2016 European Championship in France , they took first place in the FIFA world rankings, but lost that to Argentina after a friendly defeat against Portugal in March 2016 . After the Belgian national team did not live up to their role as favorites at the European Championship finals in France and were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Wales , Wilmots was sacked. After the Spaniard Roberto Martínez took over, Belgium became the first European team next to host Russia to qualify for the 2018 World Cup and won the group with three wins in three games. Subsequently, after victories against Japan (3: 2) and record world champions Brazil (2: 1), they reached the semi-finals and lost there against eventual world champions France (0: 1). The tournament ended Belgium in third place after beating England 1-0.
Participation of Belgium in the European Football Championship
Belgium took part in the final round of the European Championship five times, once as a host for four participants, for which Belgium also had to qualify, twice in a final round with eight participants, once in a final round with 24 participants and once as an automatically qualified host with 16 participants.
