European football championships

history

Andorra have never been able to qualify for a World or European Championship. The national soccer team of Andorra is one of the small national teams of international soccer. The national football association of the dwarf state (75,000 inhabitants) was founded in 1994 . His national team has been active on the international stage since 1996 after the association joined FIFA . Since the qualifying round for the European Football Championship 2000 , Andorra has participated in all European and World Cup qualifications. The last place in the qualification group was taken in all participations. In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , Andorra met Estonia , the Netherlands , Romania , Turkey and Hungary . Andorra also ended this qualification as bottom of the group without winning points. Andorra ranks 136th in the FIFA world rankings as of 25 July 2019.

The goals scored against opponents such as Portugal and Ireland are already considered successes in Andorra . Apart from that, seven victories have been recorded so far, including the successes achieved in the context of World Cup qualification, the 1-0 against Macedonia on October 13, 2004 and the 1-0 against Hungary on June 9, 2017, and most recently in the European Championship -Qualification a 1-0 home win over Moldova on October 11, 2019. Andorra's selection was also successful against Albania (April 2002), Belarus (April 2000) and Liechtenstein (March 2018). On February 22, 2017, the only away win in the friendly game in San Marino was achieved so far. On October 10, 2016, Switzerland played in the qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Andorra and won 2: 1 and on August 31, 2017 in St. Gallen 3: 0. So far there have been no international matches against Germany and Austria (see also the list of international matches for the Andorran national soccer team ). The Spanish manufacturer Joma equipped the national team until 2006 . The current supplier is the Italian manufacturer Macron .

Problems

It is proving difficult for the association to find enough talented players from the 75,000 inhabitants of the small state, especially since there are no full-time professional teams in the country. Only two of the actors are professionals, the rest of them play on a semi-professional basis. To make matters worse, the Andorran laws hardly make naturalization of players possible. A player would either have to live in the state for 20 years, marry a citizen or graduate from university there.

In addition, there is no stadium or training facilities in Andorra, the team plays in the Estadi Communal with a capacity of almost 1200 spectators. However, since land in the Pyrenees is very expensive and the association has little money, hardly anything will change in this situation. International matches against attractive opponents have also been played repeatedly in Spain , for example in Barcelona and Lleida .

In 2014 the Estadi Nacional , the new national stadium with 3,306 seats, opened in the capital Andorra la Vella. In 2017, the reigning European champions Portugal came to a World Cup qualifier in the stadium, which was almost sold out with 3,193 spectators.
