The Armenian National Football Team is the national football team of Armenia and is managed by the Armenian Football Association . She played her first match after the partition of the Soviet Union against Moldova on October 12, 1992 .
The team has not yet been able to qualify for a soccer world championship or a soccer championship . The team is currently ranked 90th in the FIFA world rankings as of December 2017. From April 2006 until his death in September 2007 the team was coached by the Scotsman Ian Porterfield . On March 30, 2009, the Armenian Association separated from coach Jan Børge Poulsen , the new coach was the previous assistant coach Wardan Minasjan . On March 5, 2014, the Swiss Bernard Challandes took over the team. After only nine games, record international Sarkis Howsepjan took over the coaching position for five games, then Varuzhan Sukiasyan became national coach for the second time. Joaquín Caparrós has been the team's coach since March 2020 .
World Championship participation
- 1930 to 1994 - Did not participate, was part of the USSR national football team .
- 1998 to 2018 - Not qualified.
European Championship participation
As part of the USSR and the CIS, Armenia took part in the European Championships from 1960 to 1992. In the Soviet national team, however, Armenian players played no role. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union into several independent states, Armenia first took part in the qualification for the European Championship in 1996, but was never able to qualify. In qualifying for the European Championship 2012, third place was the best ranking so far and there was the possibility to qualify at least for the playoff games of the group runners-up. That chance was missed by a loss to Ireland on the final day of the game. Otherwise only the penultimate or last group places were reached.
