The 2018/19 UEFA Nations League will be the first to play this tournament. It will take place in three phases from September 6, 2018 to March 31, 2020.
A qualification for the European Football Championship 2021 is possible via this competition . The league affiliations in the UEFA Nations League 2020/21 are also determined via promotions and relegations .
mode
Group stage
All 55 UEFA members take part in the UEFA Nations League. It is played in four leagues ( divisions ). For this first draw, the national teams were assigned according to their UEFA coefficients as of October 11, 2017. Leagues A and B consist of four groups with three national teams each, League C consists of one group with three teams and three groups with four teams each. League D consists of four groups with four teams each. The groups within the divisions were drawn by lot on January 24, 2018 in the SwissTech Convention Center in Lausanne . Each team has to compete twice against all group opponents between September and November 2018. The game is played according to the concept of the week of football , which has been used in the European Championship qualifiers since 2014. Originally it was planned that the group winners of the lower divisions would move up to the next higher league, the bottom of the group (with the exception of League C, Group 1) and the worst group third in League C would be relegated to the next lower class. At the meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee on September 24, 2019 in Ljubljana , it was decided to increase Leagues A, B and C to 16 teams each, so that no team had to be relegated and, furthermore, from League C all runners-up and from League D all Second and the best third in the group rose.
Final round ( Final Four )
The four group winners of the highest league ( Division A ) play the UEFA Nations League winners among themselves in the knockout system in June 2019. The semi-finals will be drawn by lot. The venue will be in one of the four qualifying nations and will be determined by the UEFA Executive Committee in December 2018. The three teams from League A, Group 3 have applied to host the final round: Italy, Poland and Portugal. As UEFA wanted to award the matches to the winner of a group in League A, the decision was only made after the end of the group stage.
As the Portuguese national team won the group ahead of Italy and Poland in Group 3 of League A, the Nations League finals took place in Portugal in June 2019. The venues have been set by UEFA as Porto and Guimaraes.
Play-offs - qualification for the European Championship 2021
The qualification for the European Football Championship 2021 (initially planned for 2020) will be played after the Nations League group phase has ended. The overall table of the UEFA Nations League, which emerged after the end of the group phase, formed the basis for the draw pots for the European Championship qualification. The first 20 EM participants, consisting of the ten group first and second of the ten qualifying groups, are then determined via the qualification games. The four remaining EM tickets will be awarded in play-offs, probably in October and November 2020. The 16 group winners from the group stage of the UEFA Nations League are initially entitled to start. These four teams then play against each other in a knockout system, with two semi-finals and one final for the EM ticket.
However, if some group winners have already qualified for the EM 2021 via the EM qualification groups, there are replacement tables with relatively complex rules, which in extreme cases can lead to four teams from three leagues (League A, League B and League C) play the play-offs for a single European Championship ticket. The only thing that is certain from the outset is that four other teams from all leagues of the UEFA Nations League will travel to the 2021 European Championship after the play-offs are over. Thus, at least one team from each league - even from the lowest division with the weakest teams - will take part in the EM. The play-offs were drawn on November 22, 2019.
Timeframe
The Nations League games will mainly take place on dates on which friendly games would otherwise have been planned, so that there will be hardly any additional workload for the teams and no time conflicts with the dates for the European and World Cups.
