Lars Christian Andreas Ekberg (born January 2, 1985 ) is a Swedish football referee .

Athletic career

Ekberg plays football at Torns IF in his youth , but decided to switch to the referee position at a young age. Initially still active as a player, at the age of 16 he was already leading adult games and breaking several age records. In August 2007, at the age of 22, he made his debut as a referee in the top division Allsvenskan when he originally had to take over the game management as an assistant in the duel between Gothenburg club GAIS and Gefle IF due to an injury to main referee Daniel Stålhammar in the second half.

In 2009 Ekberg officially became a referee for Allsvenskan, and in 2013 he became a FIFA referee . In the same year he was named Referee of the Year in Sweden at the Fotbollsgalan . In the following years he headed games in youth tournaments such as the U-17 European Championship 2014 or the U-19 European Championship 2015 , and he was also regularly featured in the UEFA Youth League . There he was referee of the final in the 2017/18 season , in which the FC Barcelona youth team prevailed against the FC Chelsea youth .

Ekberg made his first appearance in a competition for senior national teams as part of the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League, directing the game between Iceland and Switzerland , which the “Nati” won in October 2018 with a 2-1 away win decided. A few weeks later he was again named Sweden's Referee of the Year. In the summer of the following year he was one of the referees at the U-21 European Championship 2019 .

Ekberg completed training as a police officer before becoming a full-time referee.
