The Gefle IF , actually Gefle Idrottsförening (German: Gefle Sports Association ) is a Swedish sports club from Gävle . The club is best known for its soccer team , which plays in the third highest Swedish league, Division 1 .
history
The club was founded in 1882 as Gefle Sportklubb with the departments of skiing , ice skating , rowing and ball games . About a month and a half later, the club name was changed to Gefle IF .
Soccer
Even in the early years, the Gefle IF football team attracted attention nationwide when they won the Rosenska Cup , a cup competition sponsored by Clarence von Rosen , several times . The team beat the Stockholm club AIK in 1899 and 1900 , and in 1902 the team won against Djurgårdens IF . In 1901 Gefle IF was also in the final, the game ended in a 1-1 draw and since there was neither overtime nor a replay at the time, the cup did not go to any club that year.
In the 1930s, the club's next successful period followed, when the team under coach Thure Svensson , formerly a Swedish national player, was able to rise to the Allsvenskan for the first time in 1933 after successes in the promotion games against IFK Norrköping . After two seasons - with the club benefiting from the exclusion of Malmö FF in the first year - she had to relegate again. In the following years, the club stayed in the second division, before relegation to third division followed by a crash that led the team to the fourth division until 1953.
The first half of the 1960s was again marked by success: In 1961 Gefle IF returned to the third division and was able to celebrate the return to the second division just two years later. After Sigvard Parling's commitment , the promoted team finished fourth in Division 2 Norrland in the 1964 season , and in the following season achieved twelve wins in 18 games. In the promotion round, the team failed without a win as the bottom of the table behind the two promoted GAIS and IK Brage and Grimsås IF . Since a number of players left the club after the missed promotion, there was a break that led to relegation to the third division in the subsequent season.
After several years in the lower leagues, Gefle IF joined forces with Brynäs IF after the end of the 1978 season and entered the third division under the name Gefle IF / Brynäs . Without defeat, the team won the championship in Division 3 Södra Norrland in 1979 and after the name had been reduced back to Gefle IF , they reached the 1982 relegation games to Allsvenskan. After two victories over Kalmar FF , Gefle IF reported back to the top class after almost fifty years of interruption, again the stay lasted only two years, as the team in the season 1984 due to the poorer goal difference compared to the equal points Östers IF and IF Elfsborg last place in the table occupied.
In the years after relegation Gefle IF oscillated between second and third level. In 1999, when the two second division seasons were merged to form the new Superettan , the team missed qualification after a goalless draw away and a 2-2 draw on their own spot due to the away goals rule against FC Café Opera . In the third division, the season was dominated and after two successes over IF Brommapojkarna , the team reached the second division. There she played directly for the promotion, which was just missed in 2001 as fourth in the table. After two years in midfield of the league succeeded in the 2004 season behind BK Häcken the runner-up, which meant the renewed promotion to the Allsvenskan.
In the first division season 2005 Gefle IF fought for relegation, which was accomplished in eleventh place. Due to the fair play rating of the UEFA , which Sweden led as the winner, the team took part in the UEFA Cup for the first time in the 2006/07 season . There, however, after a home defeat and a draw against Welsh representatives AFC Llanelli , she was eliminated in the first qualifying round. In the following years, the club occupied places in the second half of the table, but was able to hold the class for a longer time in contrast to the earlier first division stays.
In summer 2010 Gefle IF qualified again for the European Cup as the winner of the fair play rating in the 2009 season .
