Juventus Stadium , venue for the final
The 2013/14 UEFA Europa League was the 43rd edition of the second most important competition for European football clubs , which was held under the name of the UEFA Cup until the 2008/09 season. 194 clubs from all 53 national associations of UEFA took part in the competition this season .
The season began with the first leg of the first qualifying round on July 2, 2013 and ended with the final on May 14, 2014 at Turin's Juventus Stadium , home of Juventus Turin . There, FC Sevilla won against Benfica Lisbon for the third time in the Europa League with a 0-0 after extra time and 4-2 on penalties.
With Sevilla FC, a club won the competition that had not even qualified for it and was ranked ninth under the Primera División 2012/13 only due to the non-admission of the clubs in front of it Malaga FC (violation of the financial fair play rule ) and Rayo Vallecano (no UEFA license) was promoted to the competition.
With this victory, Sevilla FC qualified for the 2014 UEFA Super Cup .

Group stage
As in the previous year, in addition to the defending champions, the cup winners from associations 1–6 in the UEFA five-year ranking were automatically qualified for the group stage. Since the place for the defending champion was not needed due to the double qualification of Chelsea FC , the third-placed placed 7th ( Anzhi Makhachkala ) - the Russian cup winner CSKA Moscow qualified for the Champions League - in the group stage. 48 teams from 27 regional associations are taking part in the group stage, 7 teams were directly qualified, plus ten clubs from the Champions League qualification. Another 29 places were determined in the Europa League qualifying rounds.
Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Beşiktaş Istanbul , who have provisionally participated in the qualifying competition, each failed with their appeals before the International Court of Sports . Beşiktaş Istanbul was replaced by their opponent in the play-offs, Tromsø IL , while the substitute team for Fenerbahçe Istanbul was determined by drawing lots among the 29 remaining losers in the play-off round. The lot fell on APOEL Nicosia .
The group winners and runners-up qualified for the sixteenth-finals, while those placed third and fourth were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied after the group matches, the placement was determined by the following criteria:
- Number of points in direct comparison
- Goal difference in direct comparison
- Number of goals in direct comparison
- Number of away goals in direct comparison
- If, after applying criteria 1-4, two or more teams still occupy the same place in the table, criteria 1-4 are reapplied for these teams. If this does not result in a definitive placement, criteria 6–8 will be applied.
- Goal difference from all group matches
- higher number of goals scored
- Club coefficients
The 48 teams qualified for the group stage were divided into four pots of 12 teams on the basis of their club coefficient (KK), and one team from each pot was drawn into one of the 12 groups (A to L); Teams from the same association could not be drawn into the same group.
The draw took place on August 30, 2013 in Monaco .
The game was played on six days from September 19 to December 12, 2013, with kick-off times at 7:00 p.m. and 9:05 p.m.
