Skonto Riga (officially Skonto Futbola Klubs ) was a Latvian football club from the capital Riga . The club was founded in 1991 and is the record champion in Latvia with 14 titles .
history
The association was founded in 1991 as Forum-Skonto and renamed Skonto FC in 1992 after President Guntis Indrikson's group of companies of the same name, which includes construction companies, steel dealers, freight forwarders, a luxurious fish restaurant in Riga and the private radio station Radio Skonto .
Under the name Forum-Skonto , the club first won the regional championship of the Latvian Soviet Republic in 1991, and then from 1992 to 2004 won all championship titles in independent Latvia as Skonto FC . In the meantime, the championship of 1991 is listed on the association's website as the first after the reintroduction. This series could only be ended in 2005 by FK Liepājas Metalurgs . In addition, the team has made it to the Latvian Cup final twelve times, which it has won seven times so far.
Discount's home ground was initially the Daugava Stadium ( Daugavas stadions ) until the 9,500-capacity Skonto Stadium ( Skonto stadions ) was opened on June 28, 2000 .
Skonto regularly took part in the Baltic League and was twice in the finals of this competition. In 1993/94, the club lost 9:10 on penalties against Žalgiris Vilnius , and in 2008 Konto lost 2-1 against FBK Kaunas . But a few years later Skonto won the Baltic League against FK Ventspils on penalties in the 2010/11 season .
Before the 2014 season, Skonto was initially denied the required license for the Virslīga because of long-term debts. However, the license was later granted in a successful process. However, UEFA failed to participate in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League . On May 30, 2014, the Latvian Football Association banned the club from signing players during the summer transfer period until the debts have been paid off.
On July 6, 2014, the players refused their away game at FK Liepāja because of long outstanding salary payments . The game was then rated 0: 3 for the opponent. President Vladimir Koļesņičenko then announced his resignation and was replaced by Igor Zaicevs. On September 2, the association was initially deducted three points for failure to meet its obligations, which was later reduced to one point. Since payments to the State Revenue Service as a creditor were also not made in October 2014, a further four points were deducted. In November it became known that Skonto had paid off his debts. However, the license for the 2016 season was not granted. In December 2016, the club went bankrupt and was ultimately dissolved.

The basketball department had a professional men's team in the Latvian basketball league from 2001 to 2004 , which continued the tradition of BK Brocēni, who won the first national championships after independence from 1992 to 1999. In the three seasons of the BK Skonto you became runner-up after you lost the final series of the championship against BK Ventspils , who had replaced Brocēni as series champion. In 2004 the team was removed from the Skonto club and later called itself again ASK Riga . Under this name they reached another championship in 2007 before the game was stopped in 2009.
