Aleksandrs Cauņa [ t͡sɑu'ɲɑ ] (born January 19, 1988 in Daugavpils ) is a Latvian football player . Most recently he was in Russia with CSKA Moscow .
Club career
Cauņa began his career in the youth of his home club Dinaburg Daugavpils . At the age of 14 he was signed by the Latvian record champions Skonto Riga . In Riga he went through all the youth teams of the club before he was awarded to the smaller Olimps Riga in 2006 in the second Latvian league . He had his breakthrough at Olimps. He scored five goals in a half-year and rose to the Virsliga with Olimps at the end of the season .
In the summer he was brought back from his home club, where he matured into a high performer. Despite three strong seasons of Cauņa he was denied a title win. In February 2009 he moved on loan to the Football League Championship at Watford FC . He had previously completed a trial session at Chelsea , which wanted to sign him for his reserve team. During the trial training he was noticed by the Watford officials who offered him the prospect of A-team football.
After his move, he had to wait until April 2009 before he was allowed to complete his first assignment from the start for Watford. In the game against Southampton FC , he scored a goal with a volley, which caused a stir in the English press. Previously, he said he had adjustment problems with the physical game in England, which meant that he only played a short stint for Watford until April. The 90 minute debut was followed by three short appearances. At the end of the loan period, the decision was made against a commitment from Cauņa - also because of a high demand for a cash discount.
Since there were no other offers, he returned to Latvia for the 2009/10 season.
On February 1, 2011, Cauņa signed a loan deal with CSKA Moscow .
National team
After strong performances at the club, Cauņa was appointed to the national team of Latvia for the first time in 2007 . He made his debut on June 2, 2007 in qualifying for the 2008 European Football Championship in a 2-0 defeat against Spain .
Most recently, he caused a sensation in the qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, when he scored 1: 1 in the 2: 2 against Switzerland with a long shot.
