The FC Dinaburg Daugavpils was a Latvian football club from Daugavpils , which was dissolved after the disclosure of match-fixing.

history

The club was founded in 1990 as Celtnieks Daugavpils . In 1991, in the first Virslīga season , fourth place was achieved. The club won the Latvian Cup with a 3-1 win on penalties against Skonto Riga . In 1992 the club started as BJFK Daugavpils , from 1993 under the name Auseklis Daugavpils . The team occupied meanwhile places in the midfield. In 1995, Vilan Daugavpils took fourth place.

The club has had its current name since 1996. In the league, third place was taken 26 points behind Master Skonto Riga. In their first appearance on the international stage in the first round of the UEFA Cup , the club failed after a 0-0 draw in the first leg at Barry Town with a 2-1 home defeat.

In 1997 Dinaburg reached the cup final. The third of the season had to admit defeat to Master Skonto Riga. In the first round of the European Cup Winners' Cup , the first victories come: Kepez Ganja from Azerbaijan was defeated 1-0 each time. In the second round, AEK Athens turned out to be too high a hurdle, a 5-0 defeat in the first leg was followed by a 4-2 win at home.

Since 1998, Dinaburg has consistently placed fourth in the first division. 2001 the cup final was reached again, again Skonto Riga proved to be too strong.

First match fixing

On March 15, 2007, the team was excluded from the current season of the Baltic League on suspicion of match-fixing. The day before, the away game against the Estonian representative JK Trans Narva was lost 2-0.

Exclusion from the championship

After the 2008 season, FC Daugava Daugavpils merged with the club, the name FC Dinaburg was retained. A year later, FC Dinaburg was subsequently excluded from the 2009 championship due to the manipulation of games and placed in last place. Based on clear evidence, the national association also banned club president Oleg Gawrilow and coach Tamaz Pertia for life. The club then no longer took part in the league game operation, the team was also eliminated from the current Baltic League season. Most of the players joined FC Daugava, which took over the place in the first division.
