The FC Daugava Daugavpils ( Russian ФК Даугава Даугавпилс ; until the end of 2006 "FC Ditton Daugavpils") is a Latvian football club from Daugavpils .

history

The club Ditton Daugavpils, which was founded in 1909 and from which FC Daugava Daugavpils emerged, played only in the second division for a long time and narrowly missed promotion several times. Also in 2003, the team was only third, but after the first division Gauja Valmiera could no longer participate in the game operations in the Virslīga due to financial problems , the club received the starting place in the first division in 2004. There the club finished seventh at the end of the season and had to compete in the relegation against FK Venta . After both games were lost 0-1, the club was relegated straight away.

In 2005, Ditton only finished fifth in the second division, but since some second teams from first division clubs were placed in front of them, they still reached the relegation games. Against Olimps Riga , the club prevailed 2-0 and rose again.

With a balanced record of ten wins and ten defeats in eight draws, Ditton came in fifth behind local rivals Dinaburg Daugavpils . The second team, promoted to the second division at the same time, made it to runner-up there.

At the end of 2006, the club was renamed by the new club management in FK Daugava Daugavpils. Accordingly, the year of foundation was changed to 1944, although the club has no connections to the original FK Daugava Riga except for the coat of arms it has taken over .

After the 2008 season, the club merged with FC Dinaburg, but provided a team in the second division as FC Daugava. Although only the ninth place could be achieved there, the club was offered a place in the first division after the exclusion of FC Dinaburg due to match manipulation, which was also accepted, with most of the local rivals' players being taken over. There the team finished fourth in the new season. In the 2012 season Daugava managed to win the first league title in the club's history and thus qualify for the UEFA Champions League .
