↑ UEFA Champions League 2012/13
|
The 2012/13 UEFA Europa League was the 42nd edition of the second most important competition for European football clubs , which was held under the name of the UEFA Cup until the 2008/09 season. 193 clubs from all 53 national associations of UEFA took part in the competition this season.
The season began with the first leg of the first qualifying round on July 3, 2012 and ended with the final on May 15, 2013 in the Amsterdam Arena . There, Chelsea won 2-1 against Benfica Lisbon with a last-minute goal from Branislav Ivanović and thus, after the Champions League in 2012, also won the Europa League title the following season.
With this victory, Chelsea FC qualified for the 2013 UEFA Super Cup .
Attendees
The participants qualified through the national championships and cup competitions of the UEFA member associations. The title holder of the previous year and the national association cup winners of the nations were automatically eligible to start in the first six places of the five-year ranking, provided they had not qualified for the higher-quality Champions League competition. In the 2011/12 season, then-defending champion FC Porto did not take part in the competition because, as the Portuguese champions, they qualified directly for the Champions League. All other participants were determined through qualifying rounds, entered the competition as losers in the Champions League qualification or after the preliminary round as third-placed in the Champions League group stage.
mode
Initially, three qualifying rounds took place between the beginning of July and the beginning of August 2012. The fourth and final qualifying round was called the “ play-off round” for the purpose of better marketing . These games took place at the end of August 2012. When a team went into qualification depended on the club's position in the national championship and the positioning of the home association in the UEFA five-year ranking of the 2010/11 season. In each qualifying round, the participants were divided into seeded and un seeded clubs based on their club coefficient (KK); purely national pairings were excluded.
In the subsequent group stage, 48 teams were divided into four pots using the club coefficient and then divided into twelve groups of four teams each using a lottery procedure. As in the Champions League, each group played a full series of home and return matches, so the group stage consisted of six match days.
The first and second in the group stage reached the final rounds, third and fourth placed teams were eliminated. These 24 teams were joined by the eight third-placed teams from the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. Thus 32 teams reached the knockout phase , in which the opponents were drawn separately for each round, who competed against each other in the two-legged game until the two finalists were determined. Two representatives of one nation were allowed to meet at the earliest in the round of 16. The final was decided in a single game.
qualification
In the draws, the teams were divided into seeded (stronger) and unseeded (weaker) teams according to their club coefficients and drawn among each other.

3 AEK Athens was revoked the license for the upcoming Europa League season by the Greek football association EPO due to financial problems. Asteras Tripolis (6th from the 2011/12 season) started in Q2,

Play-offs
- Draw: August 10, 2012 in Nyon
- First leg: 23 August 2012
- Second legs: August 30, 2012
The last qualifying round was called "play-off" for the purpose of better marketing opportunities. In this round, the losing teams of the third qualifying round of the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League were added.
6th First leg on August 22nd.
7th Second leg on August 28th.
Group stage
For the first time, in addition to the defending champions, the cup winners from associations 1–6 in the UEFA five-year ranking were automatically qualified for the group stage. Since Atlético Madrid's double qualification meant that the place for the defending champion was not needed, the cup winner moved into the group stage in 7th place ( Rubin Kazan ). 48 teams from 25 national associations took part in the group stage, 7 teams were directly qualified, plus ten clubs from the Champions League qualification. The remaining 31 places were determined in the Europa League qualifying rounds.
The group winners and runners-up qualified for the sixteenth-finals, while those placed third and fourth were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied after the group matches, the placement was determined by the following criteria:
- Number of points in direct comparison
- Goal difference in direct comparison
- Number of goals in direct comparison
- Number of away goals in direct comparison
- If, after applying criteria 1-4, two teams still occupy the same place in the table, criteria 1-4 are reapplied for these teams. If this does not result in a definitive placement, criteria 6–8 will be applied.
- Goal difference from all group matches
- higher number of goals scored
- Club coefficients
The 48 teams qualified for the group stage were divided into four pots of 12 teams each based on their club coefficient (KK), and one team from each pot was drawn into one of the 12 groups (A to L); Teams from the same association could not be drawn into the same group.
Atlético Madrid came first on the seeding list as defending champions, regardless of their club coefficient. The draw took place in Monaco on August 31 .
The game was played on six days from September 20 to December 6, 2012, with kick-off times at 7:00 p.m. and 9:05 p.m.
