Ryan Dominic Bertrand (born August 5, 1989 in Southwark ) is an English football player . The left full-back was trained in the Chelsea FC youth academy. After various positions at loan clubs, he gradually achieved his sporting breakthrough from mid-2011 and although he was only considered a substitute behind Ashley Cole , he played his part in the fact that the “Blues” won the FA Cup and the Champions League in 2012 and a year later won the Europa League . He was the first player since the introduction of the Champions League in 1992 to make his debut in the "premier class" in a final. After the end of the 2013/14 season he moved - initially on loan and "permanently" in February 2015 - to Southampton FC and after participating in the Olympics for Great Britain in 2012, he was also in France for the first time four years later at the 2016 European Championship of the England senior team nominated for a final tournament.

Athletic career

Club career

After playing for the youth team at Gillingham FC until 2005 , Ryan Bertrand moved to Chelsea FC in July 2005 , returning to his hometown of London . In 2006 he began his playing career with the men and switched to AFC Bournemouth on loan . In the following years several loan deals to lower class clubs followed in order to collect match practice. His first league goal was Ryan Bertrand while at Reading FC , when he scored against Derby County on March 10, 2010 .

On August 5, 2010, Chelsea FC announced another loan deal. Ryan Bertrand moved to the English second division Nottingham Forest for six months on loan , where he was used over the full distance in the first league game at Burnley FC . On January 3, 2011, he returned to Chelsea. On May 19, 2012, he was in the starting line-up for the London team when Chelsea won the Champions League in the final against Bayern Munich . As a trained left-back, he helped out in the unfamiliar position in left midfield in front of his club rival Ashley Cole and he was the first player since the introduction of the Champions League in 1992 to make his debut in the "premier class" in a final. In the same year he had also won the FA Cup with Chelsea , but after five appearances in the competition he did not come into play in the final. When the "Blues" won the Europa League a year later , Bertrand was again represented in the formation several times on the way to success, but was then again disregarded in the final.

On January 17, 2014, Bertrand was loaned to Aston Villa until the end of the season. For the 2014/15 season , Bertrand was initially loaned to Southampton FC , signed on February 2, 2015 and given a contract until June 30, 2019. In Southampton Bertrand finally found his "sporting luck" and in mid-2015 "Plastic", as Bertrand is called after the musician of the same name , was voted into the Premier League Team of the Year ( PFA Team of the Year ). The following year, Bertrand was largely responsible for ensuring that his team qualified for the Europa League .

English national football team

Ryan Bertrand went through several English youth selection teams. He also took part in the U-19 European Football Championship in 2008 in the Czech Republic , where he and his team were eliminated in the preliminary round. He was also nominated for the U-21 European Football Championship in Denmark in 2011 and was used in the three preliminary round matches. His team failed again after the preliminary round. A year later he was part of the British Olympic selection , which only reached the quarter-finals in London. Shortly afterwards, on August 15, 2012, Bertrand played his first game in England's senior squad in a friendly comparison with Italy (2-1) when he came on for Leighton Baines in the 78th minute . While he was not considered for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he then increasingly emerged as an alternative on the left side of defense. Finally, alongside Danny Rose from Tottenham Hotspur , who also played a good 2015/16 season as a left-back, he was appointed to the 23-man squad of the "Three Lions" for the 2016 European Championship in France . His only appearance was in the third group game against Slovakia, where he was allowed to play for the full 90 minutes.
