Alex Simon McCarthy (born December 3, 1989 in Guildford ) is an English professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for the Premier League club Southampton FC .

Club career

Born in Guildford ( Surrey ), McCarthy began his career as a student at FC Wimbledon and Wycombe Wanderers before it with 16 for Reading FC moved. McCarthy was initially unable to prevail in the first team and was awarded to a total of eight different lower-class teams. On September 16, 2012 he played his first game in the Premier League for Reading FC. At the age of 22 he had already played in the six highest English leagues.

In 2014 he finally moved to the Queens Park Rangers , a club that had recently been promoted to the Premier League. His first competitive game for the club was in a 3-2 loss to Liverpool . However, he could not establish himself as a regular player.

On 23 July 2015, McCarthy joined the Premier League club Crystal Palace for a transfer with 3.5 million pounds was given and signed a valid contract for four years. McCarthy made his Palace debut on August 8, 2015 in a 3-1 away win at Norwich City .

On August 1, 2016, he signed a three-year contract with Southampton FC. McCarthy was initially used as a backup for regular goalkeeper Fraser Forster , but was promoted to regular goalkeeper for the club on December 30, 2017 after Forster went out of shape.

On June 27, 2018, McCarthy signed a new four-year deal with the club that runs until 2020, making him one of the highest-earning players.

National team

McCarthy was in the English team that took part in the 2011 U-21 European Football Championship , but did not play any games.

In May 2013 he was called up for the friendlies against Ireland and Brazil in the English national team, but remained without appearances.

He made his debut on November 15 at 3: 0 victory of England over the United States in Wembley for the England senior team , almost five and a half years after his first nomination.
