family

Vestergaard grew up in the Vesterbro district of Copenhagen and is a Danish and German citizen . He speaks fluent German .

His German mother comes from Krefeld , his Danish father works in the Ministry of Justice in Copenhagen . His German grandfather Hannes Schröers and his uncle Jan Schröers were also active as soccer players. His cousin Mika Schröers plays for the youth of Borussia Mönchengladbach .

Career

societies

Vestergaard started playing football at Vestia Copenhagen when he was four . From there he later went to BK Frem , then to Kjøbenhavns Boldklub . Because of his growth, he was retrained from midfielder and striker to central defender . According to his own statements, he had a rapid growth spurt at Kjøbenhavns Boldklub in the first B-youth year , which had a negative impact; so the body did not adapt to the changed circumstances. Vestergaard was therefore at best a supplementary player. In the second B-youth year he then went to the suburb Brøndby IF . In Brøndby he was a top performer and also rose to the Danish national team. In the derby against his former club Kjøbenhavns Boldklub, he was noticed by scouts from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim - they actually wanted to spot a player from Kjøbenhavns Boldklub. A few weeks later Vestergaard played with Brøndby in Linkenheim at an indoor tournament; the team was eliminated in the semi-finals against the Hoffenheim A-youth. The Hoffenheim scouts then decided to sign Vestergaard.

For the 2010/11 season Vestergaard moved to TSG Hoffenheim and signed a professional contract for four years. At first he only played in the second team. On April 16, 2011, he made his professional debut on matchday 30 of the Bundesliga against Eintracht Frankfurt , when he came on for Ryan Babel in the 90th minute . He scored his first Bundesliga goal with a header on February 11, 2012 in a 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen . Both in the 2010/11 season and in the 2011/12 season, the club from the Kraichgau occupied eleventh place in the table to create relegation against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the 2012/13 season ; Vestergaard scored a goal in the second leg. One season later, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim placed ninth.

Vestergaard moved to Werder Bremen on January 27, 2015. His contract ran until June 30, 2018. At the end of the season, the club placed tenth in the table and managed to stay in the league the following season with a 1-0 win on the last match day against Eintracht Frankfurt .

For the season 2016/17 Vestergaard joined Borussia Moenchengladbach . In two seasons he played 66 games in the Bundesliga. Vestergaard missed qualifying for the international competition with the foal eleven in both seasons by finishing ninth.

For the 2018/19 season, Vestergaard moved to the Premier League for Southampton FC .

National team

In 2010 and 2011 Vestergaard played 13 games for the Danish U-18, U-19 and U-20 national teams. As a U-21 national player , he qualified in 2014 for participation in the U-21 European Football Championship in 2015 . During this tournament he led the U-21 national team as team captain and reached the semi-finals, which were lost 4-1 to Sweden . For the U-21s he scored four goals in 28 games.

Since August 14, 2013 Vestergaard has been playing for the Danish national team . In the summer of 2015, coach Morten Olsen did not nominate him for the European Championship qualifiers against Albania and Armenia . Vestergaard then said he could imagine playing for the German national team as he had not yet played a competitive game for the Danish national team. However, since his first competitive game for the Danish national team on November 17, 2015 in the European Championship play-off second leg against Sweden , a change of association is no longer possible. In this game, Vestergaard scored the goal to make it 2-2, but it was not enough to qualify for the Euro 2016 .

In November 2017 Vestergaard qualified with the Danish national team for the 2018 World Cup ; in the qualification he came to three missions. Denmark finished second behind Poland and qualified for participation in the play-offs , in which the Danish side beat Ireland . Vestergaard was part of the Danish squad at the World Cup in Russia , but was not used.
