Stuart Armstrong (born March 30, 1992 in Inverness ) is a Scottish football player who plays for Southampton FC .

Career

Stuart Armstrong was born in Inverness in the Scottish Highlands in 1992 . Together with Fraser Fyvie , he attended Hazlehead Academy in Aberdeen until 2003 . From 2003 he played for the Dyce Boys Club in Aberdeen for five years before returning to his hometown in 2008 and playing for Inverness Caledonian Thistle in youth. At the Caley Jags he was coached by former Rangers player Alex Cleland . Two years later, the Armstrong family moved to Dundee . In June 2009 he signed with Dundee United . He made his debut for the Tangerines in the 2010/11 season against Hamilton Academical when he was substituted on for Scott Robertson . The first goal he succeeded in the following season in a 2-2 in the league game against FC St. Mirren . In September 2012, the talent signed a new three-year deal with United . In addition to being named Young Professional of the Month for February in the 2012/13 season , he also won the SFWA Young Player of the Year election at the end of the season . Together with his teammate from United Gary Mackay-Steven , Armstrong moved to Celtic Glasgow in February 2015 . He made his debut for the Bhoys on February 11 in the league game against Partick Thistle , in which he also scored his debut. With Celtic he was four times champion, twice cup and three times league cup winner in the following years.

In June 2018 he moved to Southampton FC in the English Premier League and received a four-year contract.

National team

Stuart Armstrong made his debut for the Scottish U-19 national team against Luxembourg in 2010 . On his second appearance for the U-19s, Armstrong was able to achieve a brace in a 4-0 win over Montenegro after being substituted in the 72nd minute of the game. In addition to seven appearances he completed in 2010 in the U-19, the midfielder made his debut in the Scottish U-21 against Northern Ireland in the same year . As the successor to Paul Hanlon , he held the position of team captain from 2011 . In May 2013 he was appointed by Gordon Strachan the coach of the Scottish senior team for the upcoming international match against Croatia , but did not have any minutes.

In March 2017 Armstrong made his debut for the senior team of Scotland against Slovenia at Hampden Park . In his third international match in September 2017, he scored the first goal in the national jersey against Lithuania .
