U-21 European Championships
The first European Under-21 Championship ever held was in 1978. The limit was lowered from 23 years to 21. Scotland could not qualify, however. In 1980, the Scottish U-21s took part in a European Championship for the first time. In the quarter-finals, which is also round 1, they lost against the English selection 1: 2 (0: 0, 1: 2). In 1982 they were defeated by Italy 0-1 and in 1984 Scotland won the first leg in round 1 against Yugoslavia 2-1, but then lost in the second leg 3-1 after extra time. In 1988 they failed again to England (0: 1, 0: 1). At the European Championships in 1992, the U-21 team eliminated Germany in the quarter-finals (1: 1, 4: 3), but then failed in the semi-finals to Sweden with 0: 1. The last time a Scottish U-21 team played was in Spain in 1996. In the quarter-finals they defeated Hungary 4-1, the semi-final they lost 2-1 to Spain and in the third place match they were defeated 0-1 by Italy. Since then, the Scottish U-21 selection has not been able to qualify for a European Championship. Scotland is currently qualifying for the 2009 European Championship in Sweden . Scotland is in group 6 alongside Finland, Denmark, Slovenia and Lithuania, the respective winners of the ten groups and the four best runners-up play-off games to get into the main round in 2009. With a 1-0 Losing on the last day of the qualification, Scotland was thrown back to 3rd place in Group 6 and could not qualify for the European Championship in Sweden.
