The final round of the U-21 European Football Championship 2013 took place for the first time from June 5 to 18, 2013 in Israel, whose team was automatically qualified for the round of the last eight teams. All other 52 teams had to qualify in the preliminary round. Players born on or after January 1, 1990 were allowed to participate. The German selection did not survive the preliminary round at this tournament.

qualification

The 52 teams played in two groups with 6 teams and 8 groups with 5 teams in the first and second leg. The 10 group winners and the 4 best runners-up qualified for the playoffs. The 14 qualified teams played the final round participants in 7 matches with a home and return leg. Added to this was Israel, which did not have to play any qualifying matches as hosts.

The group matches were played in the period from March 25, 2011 to September 10, 2012, the play-offs took place on 11/12. October 2012 and on 15./16. October 2012.

mode

The teams were divided into two groups. The group winners and the runners-up reach the semifinals, the winners of the semifinals reach the final. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decides.

The games of the European Championship were led by six referees . They were supported by eight line judges , eight gate judges and two fourth officials . The oldest referee was Paweł Gil from Poland at the age of 37; Youngest director of the Slovene Matej Jug at 33 and youngest assistant to the Belarusian Dzmitry Zhuk at 26. All 22 referees were from different nations.

Television broadcast

The free TV rights for the U-21 European Championships have kabel eins and Sat.1 (both subsidiaries of ProSiebenSat.1 Media ), the u. a. All German games are broadcast, and Sport1 (subsidiary of Sport1 Medien ), which broadcasts all non-German games, is backed up.

Criticism of the award

The initial award to Israel also provoked criticism. In an open letter to UEFA in the Guardian newspaper in May 2013, the association was accused of "lack of sensitivity" with regard to Israel's "blatant and deeply rooted discrimination " against Palestinian athletes. The award rewards the "blatant and illegal behavior" of Israel. Those who signed the letter include Desmond Tutu , Frédéric Kanouté , Ken Loach , Roger Lloyd-Pack and Alexei Sayle .
