1985 European Under-16 Football Championship

The 3rd U-16 European Football Championship was held in Hungary from May 17 to 26, 1985 . The Soviet Union won with a 4-0 victory over Greece . The GDR took fourth place, while the Federal Republic was eliminated after the preliminary round. For the first time the tournament took place with 16 teams.

qualification

This time, only 23 nations took part in the qualification, these were divided into a total of 10 groups, whereby geographical aspects were partly taken into account. There were 3 groups with three participants and 7 groups with only two participants. All ten group winners were qualified for the finals. Then there were the three runners-up in the groups of three, as well as Norway and Bulgaria, whose opponents did not appear and of course the hosts Hungary, who did not have to qualify for the final round for the first time.

The 16 qualified teams were divided into four groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners reached the semifinals. The semi-final winners reached the final, the semi-final losers played for third place.

The national team of the Soviet Union thus became European champions of the U16 / U17 juniors for the first time. It was also the first team to achieve this success on foreign soil. Soviet UnionSoviet Union
