The 5th U-16 European Football Championship was held in France from May 25 to June 3, 1987 . Italy won the final with a 1-0 victory over the Soviet Union . UEFA later revoked the Italians' title because Italy replaced Roberto Secci, who only had irregular proof of age. The title is vacant.
For the first time, the GDR did not reach the semi-finals.

The 16 qualified teams were divided into four groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners reached the semifinals. The semi-final winners reached the final, the semi-final losers played for third place.
