Performance of the German-speaking teams

Federal Republic of Germany and Austria

The Federal Republic of Germany and Austria were drawn together with Bulgaria and Finland in the preliminary round in Group 1. Austria got off to a good start with a 2-1 win in Finland, but that was their only success. This was only followed by a lean 1-1 draw in the second leg in Eisenstadt . All other four games were lost, so that Austria couldn't get past last place in the end. Things went much better for Germany. At the start in Bulgaria there was a 0-1 defeat, but all other games were won, which meant that Germany could not take first place.

In the quarter-finals, Germany had Spain as an opponent. After a 0-1 defeat away from home, the second leg in Augsburg could be won 2-0, which means that Germany made it to the next round. In the semifinals, the reigning European champions Russia were the opponents. After Germany won the away game 4: 3, there was a real shooting festival in Aachen with 5: 0. So Germany met England in the final. There the team had to admit defeat with an overall result of 4: 5.

GDR

For the finalists of the U-21 European Championship in 1980, the preliminary round group 7 was the end of the line. The East Germans disappointed on all lines, because in the four games it was only enough to a single draw (1: 1 in Norway), which only reached last place behind the group winners Poland and Norway.

Switzerland

It was just as bad for Switzerland in group 4. Switzerland came with only one win - 3-0 in Wettingen in the already meaningless game against Romania - and two draws (0-0 in Neuchâtel against England and 1-1 in Romania) not beyond the last group seat. The group winners were later European champions England.
