Michael Geiger

Michael Geiger (born September 27, 1960 in Böckingen ) is a former German soccer player and later coach .

Club career

Geiger played in his youth at Union Böckingen . His Bundesliga career began at the age of 18 at Eintracht Braunschweig . Here the defender played his first professional game five days before his 19th birthday, on September 22nd, 1979. In the Braunschweiger 1: 2 defeat at Bayer 05 Uerdingen , he came on for Manfred Tripbacher in the 79th minute . He came to eleven games in his first season . After relegation he developed in the second division north to the regular player of the concord. He was a running player with an offensive urge and good passing game, which caused unrest in the opponent.

In the two seasons 1981/82 and 1982/83 he was in every Bundesliga game of his club on the field; on September 26, 1981, he scored his first Bundesliga goal in the game against Darmstadt 98 to the final score of 3-0, which should be followed by eight more goals in the top division by the end of his career. Eintracht rose in 1985 ; Geiger's last Bundesliga game was Braunschweig's 0-1 defeat against Bayern Munich on the last day of the match. He remained loyal to his club for another season in the second division. Although he only missed a single game in the 1985/86 season and was on the field for the entire season in the remaining 37 games, he moved to the amateur division at VfL Wolfsburg after the season .

With the Wolves , Geiger rose from the Oberliga Nord to the 2nd division in 1992 . The return to professional football was over for him after a season with only twelve appearances; he ended his active career and became a coach.

Geiger made a total of 134 games (nine goals) in the first and 81 appearances (14 goals) in the second division. He wasn't even expelled from the field.

Coaching career

At the beginning of the 1993/94 season Geiger took over the coaching position at VfB Fallersleben ; in two years he led the first team from the district to the state league . After a three-year interlude at SSV Vorsfelde , which he brought from the association to the major league , he returned to Fallersleben, where he then looked after VfB in 220 national league games for seven years until the end of the 2004/05 season. In addition, he occasionally plays in the traditional team of VfL Wolfsburg.

National team

Michael Geiger is one of the players with the most appearances in school and youth national teams . He never made it into the A-selection of the DFB , but was used five times in the U-21 national team . He had his premiere in the DFB dress on September 22, 1981 in Arnsberg in a 4-2 win against Finland's U-21 team when he came on for Rudi Völler . In November 1981 he was substituted for the Austrian team (for Lothar Matthäus ). In 1982 he became vice-European champion with the U-21 . He played in the quarter-final first leg against Spain for the only time over 90 minutes; in the second leg and in the second final game against England he was substituted.
