↑ Bundesliga 1980/81 |
The 2nd Bundesliga 1980/81 was the last season of the 2nd Bundesliga - with the exception of the 1991/92 season due to reunification - which was played in two seasons.
A total of 22 (North Season) and 20 (South Season) teams played the respective season champions, who were promoted directly to the Bundesliga . In this case, increased Werder Bremen (North) and SV Darmstadt 98 (south) as Erstplatzierte directly to, the third promotion place was in a relegation between the relay Second concord Braunschweig (North) and Kickers Offenbach played (South). Here Braunschweig prevailed due to the more goals scored.
In addition to the former German champions TSV 1860 Munich , the Bundesliga founding member FC Schalke 04 and, after two years of league membership, Bayer 05 Uerdingen were relegated from the Bundesliga to the second Bundesliga.
Place numbers for single-track 2. Bundesliga
There was a sophisticated system for qualifying for the new single-track 2nd Bundesliga. First, the clubs had to meet technical qualification criteria. These stipulated that the stadiums had to hold at least 15,000 spectators and that they had to have a floodlight system within a certain period of time. If these requirements were met, sporting criteria came into play. The four first-placed teams of the north and south relays as well as the relegated Bundesliga teams were automatically qualified. The other participants were determined using a so-called “place number”. This was calculated from the positions in the table achieved over the past three years. The lower this calculated place number was, the better the club was placed. In the 1978/79 season the table position was multiplied by one, 1979/80 by two and 1980/81 by three. Years of Bundesliga membership were rated zero. For senior league years in which the promotion was not made, there were 20 points, for the seasons with promotion 16. It was also crucial which region the relegated Bundesliga 1 came from and how many teams from the respective season (north / south ) ascended. In the end, 10 teams each from the north and south should be represented. There were no promoters from the Oberliga to the 2nd Bundesliga this season.
For direct ascent * (place 1–4 ) and direct descent ** (place 17–22 / 20 ), the table position in front of the place number counts.
North
Werder Bremen was the champion of the North Season , so that after relegation in the previous year, they were promoted again. This season was the only second division season of SV Werder Bremen. Bremen's season result with 30 wins, 8 draws and 4 defeats was the best second division result of all time in absolute points according to the two-point rule (however, this season there were 42 games per team also the second most games of all time; relative to the number of games, Bremen's result is exceeded by the previous year's result from Arminia Bielefeld ). Relegated to second place was Eintracht from Braunschweig, also relegated in the previous year, which achieved promotion in the relegation against Kickers Offenbach .
Hertha BSC , also relegated from the previous year, reached third place in the table, one point behind Braunschweig, and thus remained in the 2nd Bundesliga for another season. The promotion was made in the following season 1981/82 .
Since the 2nd Bundesliga was continued on a single track after this season, a total of twelve teams were relegated to the respective major leagues. These included the founding member of the Bundesliga, Preußen Münster, and the former first division clubs Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and Tennis Borussia Berlin .
The best goalscorer of the North season was Frank Mill from Rot-Weiss Essen with 40 goals in 42 games.

The SV Darmstadt 98 secured as season champion after two years in the second division promotion to the Bundesliga, but rose after a season again. Darmstadt only achieved another rise after 34 years, in 2015.
Kickers Offenbach was second in the table, five points behind . So they had the chance to qualify for the Bundesliga via relegation. Here, however, Eintracht Braunschweig had to give way despite a 1-0 win in the first leg due to a 2-0 defeat in the second leg. Kickers Offenbach remained in the second division until promotion should be successful in the 1982/83 season .
Due to the single-track 2nd Bundesliga introduced in the following season, a total of ten teams were relegated. These included the Bundesliga founding member 1. FC Saarbrücken and the former Bundesliga club Borussia Neunkirchen .
With 26 goals in 38 games, Horst Neumann von Darmstadt 98 was the top goalscorer of the season south.

Promotion Games
The second season Eintracht Braunschweig and Kickers Offenbach played the third promotion place among themselves. Offenbach won the first leg in the stadium at the Bieberer Berg 1-0, so a draw in the second leg would have been enough for promotion. The Offenbachers lost this but with 0: 2 in the Eintracht Stadium in Braunschweig. Therefore, Eintracht Braunschweig rose as the third club in the Bundesliga due to the more goals scored.
