Franz Gerber (born November 27, 1953 in Munich ) is a former German football player , coach and manager .

Career

player

After a year in the youth club TSV Eching , Gerber moved to the youth department of FC Bayern Munich in 1964, to which he was a member until 1971. For the 1971/72 season he belonged to the professional squad and was under coach Udo Lattek on April 15, 1972 (28th matchday) - in the 69th minute for Willi Hoffmann - in the 3-1 win in the home game against Hannover 96 his debut in the top division. Due to the powerful competition in Bayern cadres ( Gerd Mueller , Uli Hoeness , Franz Krauthausen , Edgar Schneider , Bernd Dürnberger ) he moved to season 1972/73 for FC St. Pauli , which he promptly champion was, but in the promotion round to Bundesliga - as in the following season - failed.

His 33 goals in the 1973/74 season also made Bundesliga club Wuppertaler SV aware of him, who ultimately signed him. Gerber's 12 goals in 30 games could not prevent relegation at the end of the season. The Bergischen 1975/76 did not succeed in advancing either ; Despite Gerbers 19 goals in 32 games, the "WSV" only finished 5th in the table. The top scorer and top scorer of the second division north (27 goals) did not achieve championship and promotion to the Bundesliga until the following season - but in the FC St. Pauli jersey. There he fared as before with Wuppertal: The Bundesliga promotion was followed in 1978 - despite Gerber's 16 goals - the immediate relegation.

From 1978 to 1980 - Gerber moved back to his old homeland - he was under contract with the second division TSV 1860 Munich ; last season - after the promotion was successful - in the Bundesliga, which was opposite to Wuppertal and St. Pauli: The "60s" managed to stay up; Franz Gerber scored only twice in 12 games.

In 1980/81 he signed with the second division ESV Ingolstadt , for whom he scored 23 times and took 16th place in the table . In 1981/82 the single-track 2. Bundesliga was introduced, in which the south and south-west were entitled to a total of 10 places. Ingolstadt's relegation to the amateur league prompted Gerber to move to Canada and then to the United States, where he was active for the Calgary Boomers (Canada), the Tulsa Roughnecks and the Tampa Bay Rowdies (USA).

For the 1984/85 season he returned to Germany, played for the second division Hannover 96 and, meanwhile 31 years old, scored 12 goals in 37 missions and was able to celebrate his third promotion to the Bundesliga; but here too the descent followed a year later. Gerber played in 18 first division games in 1985/86 .

His last station was the second division FC St. Pauli, for whom he was involved in reaching third place in the table in the 1986/87 season with 15 goals in 34 games. On July 22, 1987 (1st matchday) - in the 3-0 away win at SG Union Solingen - he was seriously injured, so he was substituted in the 46th minute (for André Golke ) and ended his career with just one league game had to.

Gerber played in 93 Bundesliga (30 goals), 213 second division (115 goals), 18 DFB Cup games (7 goals) and 76 games (35 goals) overseas.
