Season course
Ascent
1. FC Nürnberg and Borussia Mönchengladbach had already been promoted to the Bundesliga before the last match day. Four teams fought for the third promotion place on this last match day: FC St. Pauli, Waldhof Mannheim, Greuther Fürth and LR Ahlen. As third in the table, St. Pauli was one point ahead of Mannheim and three points ahead of Fürth and Ahlen.
While Mannheim had already taken the lead against Mainz at the break and was able to take a safe victory, St. Pauli had to compete with the newly promoted 1. FC Nürnberg. After the 0: 1 deficit, Hamburg could turn this game around; the decisive hit fell in the 76th minute.
The rise of FC St. Pauli was considered a sensation for many, as the club had only just managed to stay in the league in the preseason. The good performance of Waldhof Mannheim and the newly promoted LR Ahlen was also a surprise for many.
descent
Chemnitzer FC, who won only three games in total, were the first relegated team of the season to be confirmed several weeks before the season ended. Even the Stuttgarter Kickers, who were only allowed to compete in the 2nd Bundesliga because of their license withdrawal for Tennis Borussia Berlin in the preseason, and the Bundesliga relegated SSV Ulm had no chance of staying up on the last day of the match. The only teams fighting to stay in the league were Bielefeld and new league Osnabrück. Bielefeld won its game against Saarbrücken 4-2 and held the class. Osnabrück only scored 2-2 in Duisburg and was relegated as the fourth team.
The SSV Ulm received no license for the regional league after relegation from the second division, for economic reasons. The club was classified in the fourth class Oberliga Baden-Württemberg. Since bankruptcy proceedings were initiated against the club, the club was automatically relegated from the league. Ulm played in 2001/02 with the former second team in the fifth division, the Württemberg Association League.
