The 2. Bundesliga 2006/07 started on August 11, 2006 and ended on 20 May 2007. This season was a year relegated from the Bundesliga of 1. FC Kaiserslautern , 1. FC Köln and MSV Duisburg represented. Newcomers from the regional leagues were FC Augsburg and TuS Koblenz from the Regionalliga Süd as well as Rot-Weiss Essen and FC Carl Zeiss Jena from the Regionalliga Nord .

The first to be promoted was Karlsruher SC on matchday 31 . This set the record for being the first team to be promoted every match day of the season since the introduction of the single-track 2nd Bundesliga. On the last day of the match, Hansa Rostock and MSV Duisburg were also able to make the promotion perfect. Fourth-placed SC Freiburg set a new second division record for the best half series with 41 points won in the second half of the season, while Hansa Rostock did not lose any game in the first half of the season.

The first relegated was Eintracht Braunschweig , who already had no arithmetical possibility of relegation after the 30th matchday. Three weeks later, Wacker Burghausen was also confirmed as relegated. Wacker was placed on a relegation rank throughout the season. After an exciting final matchday, Rot-Weiss Essen (0: 3 in Duisburg) and SpVgg Unterhaching (1: 3 in Rostock) also had to go into the third division, FC Carl Zeiss Jena (2: 1 in Augsburg) and Kickers Offenbach (1: 1 against Braunschweig) were able to save themselves.
