The Rosenau stadium with an official capacity of 28,000 spectators after the WWK Arena , the second largest stadium in Augsburg . It was opened on September 16, 1951 and, due to its size and modernity, was of great importance for German football and international athletics until 1972 . With the opening of the Munich Olympic Stadium, this position gradually disappeared. The FC Augsburg completed by the end of the 2008-09 season, his home games in Rosenaustadion. In 2014 it was listed as a historical monument.

history

The Rosenaustadion is a multi-purpose stadium with an athletics facility in a classic elliptical shape. The city of Augsburg built the stadium on rubble from the Second World War . The back straight of the stadium is leaning against the mountain of rubble. Construction of the stadium began in 1949 and the main stand was built in 1951. The construction costs amounted to approx. 1.1 - 1.8 million DM. It was the first new construction of a large sports arena in Germany after the Second World War.

  • "One of the largest and most modern facilities in Germany," wrote the Sport-Kurier on September 13, 1951.
  • “One of the most beautiful stadiums in Europe,” wrote the Neue Zeitung on September 13, 1951.
  • "The post-war development of German sport is inconceivable without the Rosenaustadion," said Willi Daume , former IOC vice-president and NOK boss.

The Rosenaustadion is now one of the "important buildings of post-war modernism " in Augsburg and is considered to be a "particularly early example" of this architectural style.

The main stand

Rosenau is a field name in Augsburg, derived from the Rössen, the former water arms of the Wertach . Au (also river floodplain ) refers to a lowland along a stream or river, characterized by the changing high and low water levels. The Rosenaustadion is located in such an area next to the Wertach.

The record number of spectators for FC Augsburg was in 1973 at the regional league match against 1. FC Nürnberg with 42,000 spectators. The highest number of visitors to a football match was with almost 65,000 spectators on November 9, 1952 at the international match between Germany and Switzerland, made possible by temporary additional grandstands. The German team from 1954 was also called "Augsburg Elf" because of this encounter, as eight out of eleven World Cup players were already playing together.

The absolute Rosenau record, however, was in 1958, when a total of 85,000 spectators watched the athletics competition BRD - USSR over two days . Ludwig Müller became the "hero of Augsburg" with victories over 5,000 and 10,000 meters.

The guest block is on the left under the scoreboard.

The Augsburg boxer Willi Färber was groundskeeper in the Rosenaustadion from 1951 to 1972 .

In the 1986 DFB Cup game between FC Augsburg and Hamburger SV , HSV goalkeeper Uli Stein had to leave the pitch after being shown a red card. On October 5, 1993, the first charity match in DFB history took place in Augsburg: the national team against "Bundesliga international", a selection of foreign Bundesliga players. The motto was: " My friend is a foreigner " against xenophobia .

On June 4, 2005, FC Augsburg played against SSV Jahn Regensburg in front of 27,000 spectators for promotion to the second division. FC Augsburg lost 2-1 and did not get promoted. In the 2004/2005 season 64,517 spectators came to the 17 home games of FC Augsburg.

Other major events

Between 1982 and 1997 there were five large open air concerts in the Rosenaustadion, u. a. in September 1983 with The Police as the main act, who then started their European tour of the Synchronicity Tour in Augsburg. A total of 75,000 spectators came to the major events.

The final rally of the 27th German Fire Brigade Day on June 24, 2000 was also held in the Rosenaustadion in front of over 12,000 spectators. The then Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder gave a speech.

Modernization 2006/2007

The stadium plan
The back straight of the Rosenaustadion

Due to the rise of the FCA, the Rosenaustadion was modernized in the summer of 2006 in accordance with the UEFA stadium infrastructure regulations for the Second Bundesliga :

  • Repairing the lawn with rolled turf
  • Concrete renovation of the standing walls
  • Additional barriers
  • More powerful sound system
  • Installation of video surveillance
  • Modernization of the floodlight system
  • Conversion of two guest blocks: instead of 1,571 standing places, now around 600 seats.

In the summer of 2007, underfloor heating was installed. The cost was around 400,000 euros.

The audience capacity is unofficially around 31,300 seats (before the renovation in 2006: 32,354). For security reasons, only 28,000 spectators are admitted to the league games. This is also the official capacity.

2009-2013

The FCA has been playing its home games in the WWK Arena since autumn 2009 . Since then, the Rosenaustadion has continued to be used for clubs and school sports. The FCA women's team plays their home games there, as does the second team from FC Augsburg. The Rosenaustadion was used as a training ground for the 2011 women's soccer World Cup .

To save renovation costs, parts of the stadium were closed. B. the spectator blocks of the curves and back straight, which previously had to be repaired every year due to the weather damage to the concrete.

The original plan to demolish the stadium in order to sell the site as building land for private homes and thus finance the city's share of the costs of the WWK arena was no longer pursued . One reason was that contaminated sites were found when the underfloor heating was installed. In the case of the one meter deep excavation, these were bomb fragments, parts of high-explosive bombs and old firearms (carbines). Comprehensive, in-depth investigations into ordnance, contaminated sites and building ground (including under the adjacent playing field) were not carried out. Pollution with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was known or expected .

In 2011, the Augsburg Athletics Association began collecting signatures in order to renovate the Rosenaustadion. The city of Augsburg then commissioned a planning office to determine the project costs. In 2013, the city of Augsburg included planning costs in the financial budget. A fundamental decision of the city council provided for the renovation of the athletics facility from 2014.

Since 2014

The athletics facility in the Rosenaustadion was renovated in two construction phases. In 2014, the old systems were removed and the substructure built, and the new construction began in 2015. The final theses took place in July 2015. The official opening after the renovation for 1.2 million euros took place on September 19, 2015 with a city championship. While running backwards over 4 × 100 meters, the existing world record was broken by Aleksandar Askovic, Stefan Siegert, Roland Wegner and Roland Hailer (now 62.07 seconds). The resulting eight-lane track is a specialty. In Bavaria, in addition to the Rosenaustadion, only the Grundig Stadium in Nuremberg has a competitive eight-lane circular track (the track in the Olympic Stadium in Munich is only laid for optical purposes and is not suitable for competitions). Due to the missing eighth track at the 110 m hurdles start (there is a building for the turf heating that was not taken into account during the planning for the renovation), the athletics facilities are mainly used for regional events (such as the Bavarian ones Athletics Championships 2017).
