In the past, the term international match was also used in football.

In international competitions, all athletes take part as representatives of their country and appear in the list of results under the corresponding country code. At the award ceremonies , the national anthem of the winner is usually played and the corresponding national flag is hoisted.

Special forms of international competitions are world championships or Olympic Games .

Competitions between teams from different federal states as well as between club teams from different countries are often referred to as country matches.

athletics

In Germany, national athletics competitions were very popular in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, with very high attendance figures. Frequent opponents were e.g. B. the USSR and the USA . Simple country comparisons became rarer, and more and more three and six country fights were held. In six-country competitions, each team only had one starter per discipline. In addition to the USA and the USSR, France , Great Britain , Poland and Italy were regular participating countries .

The most important venues were the Berlin Olympic Stadium , the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium in Stuttgart , the Munich Olympic Stadium and, until 1978, the Augsburger Rosenaustadion .

Between 1952 and 1978, ten international matches of the DLV took place in the Rosenaustadion, including against the USA and the USSR. The most famous international match is the surprising victory of the DLV in 1958 against the favored USSR, in which Ludwig Müller won both long distances and was dubbed by the media as the " Hero of Augsburg ". There were international athletics competitions from 1921 to 1992. Their place has now been taken by the annual European Athletics Cup . It is considered to be more interesting for spectators and athletes, as traditional athletics international competitions only had four participants per competition.

An international match between Finland and Sweden takes place regularly under the name Finnkampen .
