Finnkampen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Finnkampen ( Swedish ; in the Swedish-speaking part of Finland also Sverigekampen ; in Finnish Ruotsi-ottelu ) is an international athletics competition that is held annually between Sweden and Finland . Due to the sporting rivalry between the two nations, the Finnkampen has the greatest importance among the athletics events for both after the major international events.

The competition is held with a men's and a women's rating. In each discipline (with the exception of the relay race ) there are three competitors per country.

The first Finnkampen took place in 1925 and was only contested by male athletes. The competition has been a regular, annual event since 1945, and there has also been a women's competition since 1953.

Originally the competition was held alternately in the two capitals Helsinki and Stockholm ; since 1999 the Ullevi stadium in Gothenburg has been the Swedish venue.
