European Athletics Cup
The European Athletics Cup was a European cup competition in the field of athletics . It was initiated by the Italian Bruno Zauli, President of the European Committee of the IAAF , which is why the competition was originally also known as the Bruno Zauli Cup.
The European Cup was held for the first time in 1965 in Stuttgart (men) and Kassel (women).
Regulations
Originally held every two years, then every three, then again every two years, the European Athletics Cup has taken place every year since 1993.
For the first twenty years it was based on a qualification system, with the two best nations in each of the three semifinals qualifying for the finals (A-final or Superliga).
Each nation was represented by only one athlete in each discipline. A simple point system that only took into account placement was used for scoring. The nation of the winner of a discipline received a number of points identical to the number of participants, decreasing to the nation of the last place with one point.
In 1983 there was a restructuring that took into account the increasing number of athletes' obligations. A super league with eight members each was created for both men's and women's competitions, including a first and a second division, which were divided into groups A and B. Promotion and relegation positions replace promotion through preceding semi-finals and final rounds. This classification existed until the end of the European Cups in 2008.
In 2009 the once much noticed event was completely redesigned, but in recent years it has faded into the background. The new European Athletics Team Championship has a super league with 12 teams, a first league with 12, a second league with 8 and a third league with 14 teams. The place in the table is calculated on the basis of 20 men's and 20 women's competitions, the overall ranking according to gender is not applicable.
