Villeneuve-d'Ascq is a town with 63,408 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the north of France . It is located just east of Lille in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . Villeneuve-d'Ascq is called Technopole Verte ("Green Technology City"), which is symbolized by the city logo: a blue ball (technology) next to a green leaf (respect for the environment).

According to an etymological dictionary (Dauzat / Rostaing) the name Ascq comes from the Flemish ask , which means "ash" in German.

The city borders directly on the southeast of the city of Lille. The border with Belgium is about 20 km to the east. Around 10 km² of the urban area are green areas, forests, bodies of water or agricultural land.

history

The village of Ascq was first mentioned as Asnapio in the time of Charlemagne . For centuries it belonged to the county of Flanders and the Duchy of Burgundy , and since the Treaty of Aachen in 1668 it has been part of France.

During the Second World War , a combat group of the 12th SS Panzer Division "Hitler Youth" carried out the Ascq massacre on the night of April 1 to 2, 1944, killing 86 people. A memorial has been commemorating this massacre since 2005.

The satellite town of Villeneuve d'Ascq was founded in 1970. The new city combines the villages of Ascq ( Flemish Ast ), Annappes and Flers-lez-Lille (Dutch Laar ) and grew continuously over the years.
