history

There were plans to build a new stadium as early as the late 1990s. After the end of December 2005 finally failed project to build a successor to the Stade Grimonprez-Jooris in Lille , they looked for a new place to build. In April 2006, the Borne de l'espoir location in the Hôtel de Ville district of Villeneuve-d'Ascq was selected. At first, the construction project was also called Stade Borne de l'espoir . After the planning and preparatory work, the mayors Gérard Caudron, Villeneuve-d'Ascq, and Mark Godfrey, Lezennes, signed the building permit for the new arena on December 17th, 2009 . Construction work began on March 26, 2010 and the symbolic laying of the foundation stone took place in front of 500 guests on September 27, 2010 .

In addition to the roof that can be closed within 30 minutes, the stadium offers another special feature. The northern part of the field can be raised and moved over the south side of the field. An event arena with additional stands for concerts, basketball and handball games or other events is located under the shifted side of the field . In this version there is space for up to 29,500 visitors in the small arena.

The stadium project alone comprised a financial volume of 282 million euros. In addition, there were costs of 42 million for other peripheral developments such as hotels, restaurants, etc. 56% of the costs were raised from private funds such as sponsors, 44% were paid by the metropolitan region of Lille and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region .

On October 5, 2011, the steel girder roof construction of the closable roof was lifted and installed. It has a length of 205 meters and a width of 110 meters. With a height of 16.25 meters, the roof element weighs 7,400 tons . The four hydraulic props raised the roof about three meters per hour and assembly took about two days in total.

Advance sales for tickets to Lille OSC for the 2012/13 season began on November 17, 2011. On August 17, 2012, within the scope of the original schedule, the new home of the LOSC opened its doors for the first league game against AS Nancy . The game ended in a 1-1 draw. The first international competition in the stadium was the rugby union international match between France and Argentina on November 17, 2012, which France won 39:22. The name was changed to Stade Pierre-Mauroy in June 2013, two weeks after the eponym died.

From 1984 to 2013 the motocross event Supercross Paris-Bercy took place in the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy . With the modernization work on the Palais Omnisports , the event has been located in the Lille stadium since 2014.

On the weekend of November 21 to 23, 2014, the soccer arena was the venue for the final of the Davis Cup 2014 between hosts France and Switzerland . At the end of October 2014, the French tennis association FFT reported the event as sold out. This means that 27,000 spectators followed the games on each of the three days. From November 24 to 26, 2017, the French Davis Cup team met Belgium in the home of the OSC in the Davis Cup final . The hosts won 3-2 and won their tenth Davis Cup title.
