The Stade des Costières is a football stadium in the French city of Nîmes , Gard department in the Occitanie region . It is mainly used by the Olympique Nîmes football club .
history
The stadium was opened in 1987 by Jean Bousquet, then Mayor of Nîmes. The Stade Jean-Bouin , Olympique's venue from 1937, dates back to 1919 and was out of date. The design comes from the architects Marc Chausse and Vittorio Gregotti. Gregotti was also responsible for the renovation of the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa . Inside the arena there are facilities for basketball , fitness , fencing and martial arts . The stadium's name comes from the Costières de Nîmes wine-growing region .
On February 15, 1989, the venue was opened with the international soccer match between France and the Netherlands . The first game of Olympique Nîmes was kicked off on March 4, 1989 against FC Montceau Bourgogne . The second division game took place in front of 3647 spectators. The visitor record comes from the first division season 1991/92 with the game Olympique Nîmes against Olympique Marseille . The game saw 25,051 spectators. After the Furiani drama , the stadiums were checked for safety. As a result, the total capacity was set at 29,497 places. With today's safety regulations, the stadium is approved for 18,364.
In the 2004/05 season , FC Istres played a few games in Nîmes. The old stadium was too small and outdated and the new building was not yet finished. The SC Bastia had to play its last two games of the season 2005/06 on a neutral place and did so in the Stade des Costières .
Olympique Nîmes is planning a new stadium, which should be ready for use by 2025. The club bought the Stade des Costières for eight million euros from the city of Nîmes to demolish it. The facility was only inaugurated in 1989, but it no longer meets the requirements of a modern football stadium. The demolition of the old stadium is scheduled to begin in late 2022 or early 2023. During the construction of the new football arena, Olympique Nîmes will play in a temporary stadium with 10,000 seats. The new building with shops and a hotel will have 15,100 seats, about 3,000 fewer than the Stade des Costières. The total costs are estimated at 230 million euros. The financing is provided by the French-Lebanese businessman Rani Assaf, who is the club's president and main shareholder. According to Assaf, the new building will not have a sponsor name .
