^ Division 1 1988/89 |
The Division 2 1988/89 was the 50th staging of the second highest French football league . It has been an open championship with professionals and amateurs since 1970. The game was played from July 16, 1988 to May 13, 1989; From December 4th to February 11th there was a two-month winter break.
Olympique Lyon became second division champions .
societies
The 27 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) or lower after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also three first division relegated and six promoted from the national . These 36 participants played in two groups, divided mainly according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south and east). Thus, the following teams played for the division 2 championship this season :
- Group A: USL Dunkerque , US Valenciennes-Anzin , SC Abbeville , AS Beauvais-Marissel , promoted AC Le Touquet , FC Rouen , promoted US Créteil , Stade Reims , AS Nancy , FC Mulhouse , FC Gueugnon , promoted Le Mans UC , Stade Rennes , EA Guingamp , Quimper Cornouaille FC , relegated Brest Armorique FC , SCO Angers , AEPB La Roche-sur-Yon
- Group B: Relegated Le Havre AC , US Orléans , relegated Chamois Niort , FC Montceau , CS Cuiseaux-Louhans , CL Dijon , promoted Stade Rodez , promoted FC Clermont-Ferrand , CO Le Puy , Olympique Lyon , FC Grenoble-Dauphiné , promoted FC Annecy , FC Sète , Olympique Alès , Olympique Nîmes , FC Martigues , Istres Sports , SEC Bastia
Only the first in the group were eligible for direct promotion. In addition, there was a relegation between the worst-placed first division team, who was not directly relegated , and the best second division team, who was not directly eligible for promotion.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. In this season, as in Division 1 , the three-point rule applied on a trial basis ; however, this attempt was not continued because it did not result in a significant increase in the number of hits. In the event of a tie, the goal difference was the decisive factor for the placement. If there was still a tie - as this time between Gueugnon and Beauvais - the higher number of hits was decisive.
In both groups, the battle for first place remained tense until the last match day, and in the end, Brest, a group runner-up, was promoted to the top division again. In the relegation question it hit four teams this time, who had to return to the third division after only one season; They were accompanied by Sète, who walked this path voluntarily, and the elf from Le Puy-en-Velay . With their and the simultaneous relegation of FC Clermont-Ferrand and Stade Rodez, central France lost its only three second division clubs in one fell swoop.
1,431 hits were scored in the 612 matches; this corresponds to an average of 2.34 goals per game and represents a new negative record in the history of the league. The most successful goal scorers were in Group A Brests Paraguayans Roberto Cabañas with 22 goals and in Group B the Luxemburgish Robert Langers (Orléans) with 27 goals; The latter won the league top scorer's crown. The following season came with Racing Strasbourg , Stade Laval and Racing Lens three relegated from Division 1 ; teams from the third highest league were promoted directly, namely AS Red Star , EAC Chaumont , FC Lorient , FC Tours , AS Saint-Seurin and Olympique Avignon .

Determination of the master
The two group winners Lyon and Mulhouse, who had already met in the two previous seasons - but as they were in the promotion relegation - determined this year's champions of division 2 in the two-legged game. As in 1987 and 1988, Lyon sat 2 in both matches: 1 and won this year's second division championship.

Relegation
The group second and third fought in a two-stage elimination which of them against the first division 18. Racing Strasbourg was allowed to play for another promotion place in the top division. First, the two runners-up in a single game each met the third of the other group; Brest prevailed against Le Havre with 4-1 and Nîmes against Rennes with 1-0 and then met - now again in a two-way leg. The Bretons won their home game 3-0 and were able to afford a 0-1 in southern France.
After that, Strasbourg and Brest separated initially 2-2, the second leg saw a 1-0 win for Brest Armorique FC, who thus rose to Division 1 as the third second division .
