The Division 2 1977/78 was the 39th staging of the second highest French football league . It has been an open championship with professionals and amateurs since 1970. The game was played from August 13, 1977 to May 27, 1978; from December 12th to January 13th there was a winter break.

Second division champion was OSC Lille .

societies

The 27 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also three first division relegated and six promoted from the national . These 36 participants played in two groups, divided mainly according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south and east). So this season the following teams played for the division 2 championship : Relegated promoted

The respective group winners and the winner of the play-offs between the two runners- up were eligible for promotion . There was no relegation between the worst-placed first division clubs who were not directly relegated and the best second division clubs who were not directly eligible for promotion this time either.

Season course

Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference was the decisive factor for the placement; if this difference was still identical, it was - as in this season between Rennes and Quimper - after the majority of goals scored. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.

For the third time in a row, two relegated teams finished the season as group winners - but this was only certain for both shortly before the end of the season - and immediately returned to Division 1 . In the lower part of the table, however, it was only for two of the six league newcomers in a one-year "guest game", with the prompt relegation with Haguenau and Poissy hit two teams for whom the second division had represented a real first.

Red Star FC, which had led Group B after the first half of the season, were wound up by court order due to the club failing to make payments to a pension fund. This compulsory dissolution in view of the comparatively low debt of a good 46,000 Francs (corresponding to around 30,000 D-Marks ) was interpreted, especially within the club, as an “attempt by interested Parisian circles to get rid of a sporting competitor from the periphery”. However, in the summer of 1978 the municipality of Saint-Ouen was not ready to support the association financially either. The club was dissolved, its successor AS Red Star began a fresh start in a lower amateur class and the US Toulouse benefited from it because they - albeit sportingly relegated - as the better table-16. retained their place in Division 2 .

1,537 hits were scored in the 612 encounters; this corresponds to an average of only 2.51 goals per game. The most successful goal scorers in Group A were Pierre Giudicelli from Alès with 19 and in Group B Jean-Claude Garnier (Dunkerque) and Pierre-Antoine Dossevi (Tours) with 23 goals each; the latter two thus shared the league top scorer crown. For the following season , three relegated from Division 1 ( Racing Lens , Troyes Aube Football and Rouen FC ) were added; from the third highest league, six teams rose directly to EDS Montluçon , Montpellier La Paillade SC , US Orléans , FC Mulhouse , AAJ Blois and SC Amiens .
