^ Division 1 1984/85 |
The Division 2 1984/85 was the 46th staging of the second highest French football league . It has been an open championship with professionals and amateurs since 1970. The game was played from August 11, 1984 to May 11, 1985; There was a five-week winter break from mid-December to mid-January.
Second division champions were Le Havre AC .
societies
The 28 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also three first division relegated and five promoted from the national . These 36 participants played in two groups, divided mainly according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south and east). Thus, the following teams played for the division 2 championship this season :
- Group A: US Dunkerque , US Valenciennes-Anzin , SC Abbeville , promoted SC Amiens , Le Havre AC , AS Red Star , Stade Français 92 Paris , Stade Reims , CS Sedan-Mouzon , FC Mulhouse , Racing Club Franc-Comtois Besançon , promoted team SM Caen , US Orléans , LB Châteauroux , relegated Stade Rennes , SCO Angers , EA Guingamp , Stade Quimper
- Group B: FC Gueugnon , CS Cuiseaux-Louhans , FC AS Grenoble , CS Thonon , promoted AEPB La Roche-sur-Yon , FC Limoges , promoted CO Le Puy , relegated AS Saint-Étienne , Olympique Lyon , promoted FC Valence , AS Béziers , FC Sète , Montpellier La Paillade SC , Olympique Alès , relegated Olympique Nîmes , FC Martigues , AS Cannes , OGC Nice
Only the first in the group were eligible for direct promotion. In addition, there was a relegation between the worst-placed first division team, who was not directly relegated , and the best second division team, who was not directly eligible for promotion.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference - and should also be identical, as in this season at Limoges and Le Puy, the higher number of goals scored - was the decisive factor for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.
All three first division relegated from the previous season played with the front and reached a table position in their group at the end of the season, which entitled them to participate in the Barrages . The immediate resurgence succeeded only the team from Rennes , while the then French record champions from Saint-Étienne failed. Le Havre AC, the doyen of French football, celebrated winning the second division championship for the third time after 1938 and 1959 . Of the five newcomers from the third division, only two were able to receive the class, including CO Le Puy, an absolute D2 newcomer. The traditional capital city club Stade Français 92, however, played the season to the end, also reached a place in the middle of the table, but then withdrew into the amateur game business due to insolvency and left the second division.
In the 612 encounters 1,529 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 2.5 goals per game. The most successful goalscorers in Group A were the Dane John Eriksen (Mulhouse) with 27 and in Group B the Argentine Jorge Domínguez (Nice) with 28 goals; the league top scorer crown won Domínguez. For the following season came with FC Rouen , FC Tours and Racing Paris three relegated from Division 1 ; This time six teams rose from the third highest league due to the withdrawal of Stade Français, namely AS Beauvais-Marissel , EAC Chaumont , FC Montceau , FC Lorient , Chamois Niort and Istres Sports .

Relegation
The group second and third fought in a two-stage elimination which of them against the first division 18. FC Rouen was allowed to play for another promotion place in the top division. First, the two runners-up in a single game each met the third of the other group; Here Mulhouse prevailed against Nîmes and Rennes against Saint-Étienne each with 2-0 and then met - now again in the two-way leg - each other. The Bretons won both encounters against the Alsatians (1-0 and 4-2).
After that, Rennes and Rouen each won 1-0; in the required penalty shootout, Rennes prevailed 7: 6 and was promoted to division 1 as the third second division .
