Division 1 1983/84

The Division 1 1984/85 was the 47th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the third time after 1950 the Girondins Bordeaux , who could repeat their previous success.

The first game day was August 17, 1984, the last game day was May 28, 1985. There was a “winter break” from December 22nd to January 25th.

The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th were eligible to participate, as well as two direct promoters from the second division and the winner of the relegation round . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.

Before the start of the season, individual specialist media raised the question of whether the new international reputation of French football, achieved in the summer of 1984 by winning the European Championship and the Olympic gold medal , would also have a positive effect on league operations. In fact, there was then a slight increase in the number of spectators, and defending champion Bordeaux, from whose ranks four players ( Battiston , Tigana , Giresse , Lacombe ) belonged to the corset bars of the senior national team , apparently benefited from this momentum. This was expressed in the fact that, after the very tight championship result of the previous season, the Girondins managed a real “march through” this time, “almost as if programmed and irresistible” or, as Jean-Luc Ettori of competitor Monaco put it, “This year there was Girondins - and then all the other teams ”. This superiority was not even so strongly expressed in the table; Nantes had kept up until the end of the Hinserie and was only three points behind in the end. But in between, the “yellows” never managed to put an exclamation point in crucial moments. At the turn of the year 1984/1985 the death of two players ( Seth Adonkor and Jean-Michel Labejof) in a traffic accident had apparently "shocked" the team, and they lost, in front of their own audience, first to Brest and then to Bordeaux. In addition, the lead of these two teams on the third place Monaco was considerable, after all eleven points for Bordeaux.

The team with the best defense and the best attack in Division 1 defended their title confidently, only dropped one point in their home Parc Lescure and, despite or because of a relatively high average age of around 30, was a " Bordeaux Grand Cru ". This was also evident in the European championship cup of this season, in which the Girondins reached the semi-finals and never lost on the way there themselves. At the lower end of the final table, Marseille was the only one of the three promoted teams who could get the class, albeit only barely and only on the last day of the game. For the following season , Le Havre AC and OGC Nice replaced the direct relegated Tours and Racing Paris, and in the subsequent barrages Rouen also lost out to the second division Stade Rennes .

In France, too , the hooliganism spreading around the football stadiums in large parts of Europe had a negative impact during this season, which culminated  in the Heysel disaster at the end of May - just one day after Division 1 had ended. On the occasion of the Paris Saint-Germain FC games in particular, violent criminals took advantage of the sporting event for riots and fights and caused considerable damage in Laval and Auxerre, for example .
