The Division 1 1933-34 was the second edition of the professional French football league that from then officially under the name Championnat de Division 1 (previously: Championnat National ) changed its name. The champions became the FC Sète .
The first game day was September 3, 1933, and the last game day was May 13, 1934. However, a catch-up match (Marseille versus Roubaix) only took place on May 20th. There was no “winter break” this season; there was also play on Christmas Day and New Year's Day .
mode
The 14 clubs that had finished the previous season in the two league seasons no worse than in seventh place were eligible to participate . A division into two groups was no longer made in 1933/34; therefore there was no longer any need for a final to determine the master. There was also no promoted team because a second division was set up as a substructure only from this season .
societies
This season the following teams played for the championship title:
- three clubs from the far north ( Excelsior AC Roubaix , defending champions Olympique Lille and SC Fives ),
- two from Paris ( Racing Club , Cercle Athlétique ),
- one each from the northeast ( FC Sochaux ) and one from the northwest ( Stade Rennes UC ),
- seven from the Mediterranean coast ( FC Sète , SC Nîmes , SO Montpellier , Olympique Marseille , AS Cannes , OGC Nice and FC Antibes , which was called Olympique Antibes in the previous season ).
Season course
The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal quotient was decisive for the placement.
Before the start of the season, most of the clubs had again grazed the European player market. Racing Paris found what they were looking for mainly in Austria, Sochaux in England, Nîmes in Czechoslovakia - and in particular FC Sète, trained by René Dedieu , was perfectly complemented by two Hungarians, outside runner Márton Bukovi and striker István Lukács . The striker tandem Lukács / Beck ensured that the team from the Hérault was able to score 40 goals after ten match days. Nevertheless - and in spite of their invincibility in the home stadium (eleven wins and two draws) - Sète had not been able to break away from the main competitors: Marseille, Fives and Lille kept their chances almost until the last match day. Olympique Marseille was even at the top of the table shortly before the end of the season and could have won the title on its own. On the 25th and 26th matchday, however, the team of coach Vinzenz Dittrich lost their games - even at the bottom CA Paris - but had to play a catch-up game in front of their own audience; in it Olympique Excelsior Roubaix surprisingly lost 2: 4. At this time, the FC Sète was already on a friendly game tour in French North Africa , and the team learned from the radio that they had won the championship and also the doublé ; because Sète had already won the national cup in early May 1934 - in the final against Marseille. OM even awarded the runner-up; which went to SC Fives, which was able to leave the big local rivals and defending champions Olympique Lille behind.
In the lower third of the table, however, there was clarity relatively early on; OGC Nice and CA Paris had been clearly distanced and had to relegate to Division 2 . From this emerged with Red Star Olympique , Olympique Alès and FC Mulhouse three "returnees" as well as first division newcomer Racing Strasbourg ; the Division 1 became the season 1934/35 increased to 16 teams.
