societies
The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than in 16th place and the four promoted teams from the second division were eligible to participate . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- two clubs from the far north ( Racing Lens , US Valenciennes-Anzin ),
- four from Paris and Champagne-Ardenne ( Racing Paris , promoted Stade Français , Stade Reims , UA Sedan-Torcy ),
- two from the northeast ( FC Sochaux , Racing Strasbourg ),
- three from the northwest ( Stade Rennes UC , SCO Angers , promoted Le Havre AC ),
- three from the southwest ( Limoges FC , Toulouse FC , newly promoted Girondins Bordeaux ),
- six from the south ( AS Saint-Étienne , Olympique Lyon , Olympique Nîmes , promoted SC Toulon , defending champions OGC Nice , AS Monaco ).
Season course
The number one topic before the start of the season was "Napoléon's return to Reims", and Raymond Kopa fully met the high expectations that were attached to him: Reims' attack (Kopa – Muller – Fontaine – Piantoni – Vincent) marched from victory to victory and lost first game in November. This was achieved by Nîmes - and even with the red and whites from Champagne - whereby the team from coach Firoud caught up with Stade, a few weeks later became autumn champions and at times had a lead of up to five points. The fact that Reims even had two heavy defeats in Valenciennes and Angers at the turn of the year had contributed to this, but it was mainly due to Nîmes' consistency and an equally irresistible attack formation, in which Rahis, Akesbi and Skiba in particular "form the opposing defenses Infernal torments caused ”. Then, however, the southern French lost a number of points, while Reims barely dropped a point and won six of their last seven games, including the top duel in Nîmes. The fact that his two most successful goalscorers were out for a long time due to injuries - Piantoni from October 11 until just before Christmas, Fontaine from March 20 for the rest of the season - did not change the fact that Stade ended up five points behind seven points Had made the lead, which Nîmes had to make do with the runner-up for the third time in a row.
Racing Paris was even more goal-hungry than the new champions, who also exceeded the 100-hit mark and set a league record that is valid to the present day (including 2017/18) with a total of 118 goals. The fact that the team from the capital was only third, eleven points behind, was due to the fact that they repeatedly lost points inexplicably between numerous victories , the majority of them even in their home Prinzenparkstadion .
At the end of the table, the decisions were made relatively early; the two newcomers from Toulon and Bordeaux, the latter with over 100 goals against, as well as Strasbourg and Sochaux could not be seriously dangerous to the 15th, Olympique Lyon. In its place rose from the Division2 the following season, the FC Grenoble (for the first time in their history), FC Nancy , FC Rouen and AS Troyes-Savinienne on.
