Jean Wendling

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jean Wendling (born April 29, 1934 in Bischheim ) is a former French football player .

The club career

The well-built right-back from Alsace began his career at Sporting Schiltigheim , then at Racing Strasbourg , where he played against relegation in both years. 1957 followed his move to Toulouse FC , which ended up only in the midfield of Division 1 . It was not until 1959, when the Stade de Reims , which dominated not only in France , that he was signed, that he immediately became a regular in a top team. Reims, praised for a decade and a half for its attacking combination game and the "big names" responsible for it ( Kopa , Penverne , Bliard , Fontaine , Piantoni , Glovacki , Hidalgo and Vincent , to name just the most famous), needed sovereign and reliable defenses People - and from 1959 this included Jean Wendling, who, along with the Reims legend Robert Jonquet , Robert Siatka and Bruno Rodzik , contributed to the Rémois continuing to collect titles in the following years .

Due to his speed, comprehension and ball technique, Wendling was able to keep the opposing left wingers in check with absolutely fair means; In spite of his stature, excessive physical exertion was not his thing, which had cost his coach (that was in the club and in the national team Albert Batteux ) a lot of gray hair, although the success confirmed Wendling's style of play. The Madrilene Gento, for example, literally despaired of the Frenchman in 1959, who had just completed his third international match but did not fall for any of the little Spanish dribbler's tricks. In 1960 and 1962 Jean Wendling was French soccer champion , and in 1963 he was runner-up.

An operation in the summer of 1963 and the surprising relegation of Reims the following year heralded his slow farewell, which he finally took after a year in the 2nd division in 1965.

The national player

Between November 1959 and April 1963 Jean Wendling played a total of 26 times in the Equipe Tricolore . He was reliability in person, was spared from serious injuries, so that he was only ignored in two international matches during this period. His bad luck on an international level was that Les Bleus had a very weak phase after finishing third in the 1958 World Cup : the disappointing performance at the European Championship in their own country (1960) and the failure to qualify for the 1962 World Cup are among them black days in Wendling's biography. In July 1957, he was also a World Champion with France .

Life after football

After his active career, he worked for many years for the sporting goods company that Raymond Kopa built up and expanded on the French market with several other ex-Reims. In the 1990s he held various positions at Racing Strasbourg (general manager, 1992–1994 president, around 1999 chairman of the supervisory board).
