The World Military Cup is a 1946 being registered and since 1949 by the International Military Sports Council (CISM) organized football competition for national teams of the national armed forces . The official names are CISM World Football Trophy and CISM Women's World Football Cup . The competition initially started for men and has also been held among women since 2016.
history
The men's competition was held annually from 1946 to 1969, and every two years from 1972 with a few exceptions. The men's tournament reached its peak in terms of the number of participants between the mid-1960s and the late 1970s. With the introduction of the multi-sport military world games, which take place every four years, (1995), the football tournament was integrated into these games; In addition, there were further independent world championships until 2005. From 2001 to 2005 the name was World Military Cup .
Since 2013, the CISM World Football Trophy has been held parallel to the football competition of the Military World Games every four years . Today's system is comparable to professional football, in which the world champion is determined every four years at the FIFA World Cup and the winner of the Olympic football tournament receives the gold medal. Therefore, since 2013, the gold medal winners of the military world games no longer count as soccer military world champions, but only the winner of the CISM World Football Trophy.
In 2001, a women's soccer world championship, the World Military Women's Championship , was also introduced, which was also integrated into the military world games from 2007, but continued to be held separately afterwards. In 2016, the first CISM Women's World Football Cup was held, so the system is now the same as for men. The official world champions from 2016 are the respective winners of the CISM Women's World Football Cup.
