The Conseil International du Sport Militaire ( CISM ) is the worldwide military sports association. One goal of the association is to promote the development of international military sport on a broad basis. It was founded on 18 February 1948 for the French Nice . The first five founding countries were Belgium , Denmark , France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands . The CISM today has 133 member countries. The sports association is based in the Belgian capital, Brussels .

As a global sports organization, it is responsible for the implementation of the military world championships, so-called CISM world championships, in various sports. One year after its establishment, he took over the organization of the soccer military world championships . The participation of the sports is essentially based on the classic disciplines of the Olympic program . In addition, the CISM maintains the military pentathlon .

The CISM military world championships are held annually in the respective disciplines, whereby only active sports soldiers are allowed to start for their respective country. The motto of the CISM is “Friendship through Sport” ( English for “Friendship through Sport” ).

Since 1995 the Conseil International du Sport Militaire has organized the military world games in summer every four years , and since 2010 there have also been winter games. This major event is carried out among the soldiers according to the rules of the IOC. From the beginning, more athletes took part in the World Games than in the corresponding Olympic Games.

Military sport in Germany

Germany has been a member of the CISM since 1959 and since then has regularly taken part in military world championships in various sports with Bundeswehr selection teams and has hosted military world championships. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary, the world championships in military pentathlon took place in September 2009 at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich . In 2010, the swimmers and lifeguards in Warendorf fought for medals at the Bundeswehr sports school and in 2011 the World Games in Rio de Janeiro were the outstanding CISM event.

The Press and Information Center of the Armed Forces Base (PIZ SKB) in the Armed Forces Base Command is responsible for reporting on all events and services performed in military sport .

Military sport in Austria

The armed forces have been a member of the CISM since 1958 and also attend the CISM championships in various sports.

Competitive sport is supported in the army through various channels. Such are:

  • the ÖHSV with approx. 100 individual clubs and 400 sections
  • the army sports center
  • the Army Sports Science Service

Since 1998 women have also been organized as athletes in the armed forces.
