The Austrian Army Sports Association was founded in 1930 as an association with its seat in the War Ministry. Forerunners existed as early as 1921 in the individual garrisons of the Federal Army of the First Republic in the form of garrison sports associations. When it was founded, the Oe.H.Sp.V counted 40 garrison sports associations, e.g. Garn.Sp.V. Bregenz, Garn.Sp.V. Innsbruck (founded 1921), Garn.Sp.V. Graz, Garn.Sp.V. Melk, Garn.Sp.V. Salzburg and Garn.Sp.V. Vienna. The structure was already similar to today's.

The ÖHSV stayed out of politics in the First Republic and in the corporate state. But well-known athletes came from the ranks of the ÖHSV such as Huber, Oblinger Zumpe (cycling), Leitgeb, Leben (athletics and cross-country skiing), Martinek (boxing), Karl Kaschka (fencing), Max Stiepl (speed skating) also in civil competitions. In 1935 the ÖHSV withdrew from civil competitions due to the political situation and put its focus on military competitions.

After the “Anschluss” in 1938, the ÖHSV was dissolved. After the end of the Second World War , a sports club was founded by the B-Gendarmerie in Tyrol during the occupation , which began in 1956 as the first HSV. Further associations in Graz, Salzburg and Vienna followed.

So one began again to consider a new umbrella organization. Civil clubs like the ASVÖ or ASKÖ feared the development of a military sports club similar to that in the Eastern bloc at that time and therefore both the loss of athletes and financial support.

It was not until 1965 that the then Defense Minister Georg Prader “ordered” the establishment with ministerial instructions. On October 19, 1967, the ÖHSV was re-established for the second time.

Since 1992 the ÖHSV has been divided into nine regional associations and 90 sports. Of the 30,000 members, 650 international medals were achieved. The Austrian state champions already have over 3000 athletes from the ranks of the ÖHSV.

The ÖHSV has also appeared several times as an organizer or as a strong supporter of international championships. For example, the Ironman Austria is held or in Hochfilzen in 2005 and 2017 the biathlon world championships , the Marc-Aurel-March or the Austrian part of the super marathon Vienna-Bratislava-Budapest .
