Edmund Entacher (born September 30, 1949 in Grossarl , Salzburg ) is a former Austrian general . From November 2007 until his recall in January 2011, he was Chief of the General Staff of the Federal Army and thus the highest-ranking officer in the Austrian armed forces . From November 7, 2011 until his retirement at the end of March 2013, he was again Chief of the General Staff of the Austrian Armed Forces.

Life

Military career

After his officer training at the Theresian Military Academy from 1971 to 1974, he held various functions in the Jägerbataillon 21 in Kufstein . From 1979 to 1982 he completed his training as a general staff officer and was then chief instructor for tactics, head of the institute for officer training (institute 1) and chief of staff at the Theresian Military Academy. In 1992 he was appointed commander of the 3rd Panzer Grenadier Brigade in Mautern an der Donau . He headed several international large-scale exercises and was in command of the Land Forces Command from 2002, until this was merged with the International Operations Command to form the Armed Forces Command in 2005 . From 2006 he was the militia commissioner and from October 1, 2007 initially entrusted chief of the general staff with effect from February 1, 2008. As such, he still holds the rank of general today .

Entacher is a member of the SPÖ . His appointment by the Social Democratic Defense Minister Darabos as chief of staff was welcomed by the parliamentary parties FPÖ and BZÖ , criticized by the Greens and the coalition partner ÖVP as a "change of color".

Deposition

After differences over a planned reform of the armed forces and criticism expressed in the media of the planned abolition of general conscription by Darabos - which the minister himself had described as the only useful model for Austria until recently - Entacher was on January 24, 2011 from Defense minister recalled, later transferred to the command support center and replaced on an interim basis by his previous deputy Lieutenant General Othmar Commenda . Entacher's recall was often seen as an arbitrary action by Darabos. In the meantime, Entacher took legal action against his recall and received support from Federal President Heinz Fischer , the Commander in Chief of the Federal Army. Fritz Neugebauer, chairman of the public service union , also promised him legal help. A written notice of dismissal was not sent to Entacher until the end of August 2011, several months late.

On November 7, 2011, it became known that the Appeals Committee at the Federal Chancellery had canceled the Ministry of Defense's transfer notice without replacement. The minister then announced that he would deal with General Entacher by means of written instructions. This warned of an act of revenge:

“An act of revenge against me would be pointless, my whereabouts have an end. (Until 2013, note) I would otherwise only give them the cucumber in this short time, they would regret it bitterly. "
