Department J1: Human Resources

The human resources department plans and coordinates all areas of activity “relating to people”. These are the control of personnel development, personnel management and salaries, but also personnel support. The department coordinates troop and family support, psychological support for employees in the armed forces and, if necessary, psychological support for relatives of soldiers deployed abroad with the involvement of military chaplaincy.

Troop and Family Care Unit

The Troop and Family Care Unit is responsible for managing personnel care for the armed forces. It coordinates the following areas:

  • social care
  • the troop support

Domestic troop support includes the operation of leisure facilities and services for military personnel and cadre soldiers. Specially established leisure exchanges offer a wide variety of products: video stores, libraries, Internet cafés, bicycles, discounted tickets are just a few examples of the product range.

Troop support during international missions also provides the necessary leisure facilities and is supplemented by artist performances and excursion options:

  • family care
  • the military chaplaincy
  • psychological support
  • Legal advice
  • Careers advice for those returning to civilian working life.

Leisure exchanges in the Austrian Armed Forces

In 1992 the establishment of leisure exchanges was started in order to enable the soldiers present in the garrison to have a meaningful occupation when they are off duty. There are currently leisure exchanges in the garrisons Allentsteig , Wr. Neustadt, Mautern , Salzburg ( Schwarzenberg barracks ), Hörsching , Klagenfurt and Innsbruck . A video library has been set up in Graz .

The leisure offer includes:

  • free loan of games, voice tapes, mountain bikes , inline skaters
  • in the cultural sector, both attending events and producing in-house events
  • the organization of language, IT or other educational courses
  • the organization and participation in sporting events
  • borrowing books from the library

The leisure exchanges are intended for all soldiers who spend their free time in the barracks . Under the guidance of young NCOs , so-called leisure animators, the offer can be used free of charge by those interested.

In addition, the leisure exchanges see themselves as intermediaries for all kinds of concert visits as well as visits to football matches and other sporting events. The Allentsteig military training area also provides mental support in cases where this is necessary.

By setting up the leisure exchanges, it was achieved that the basic military servants sometimes refrain from driving home and choose a meaningful leisure activity from the offer.
