history
The first witnesses come from the Middle Ages , when Franks were settled under Charlemagne . The area around Allentsteig was given away by the Babenbergers to the Kuenringer . A castle was built here and Allentsteig Castle around 1430 . The place name came from the Illyrian dujay (for "rushing") and changed over time via Tygia , Tigin and Thige to Stige . In 1212 the place was called Adeloldstige . Around 1700 it was already called Allentsteig .
In the course of the reforms after the revolution of 1848/1849 , the city received a district office .
Allentsteig is also the place of origin of Hitler's ancestors. There are theories that in order to keep its roots a secret, after the annexation of Austria part of the village was relocated and a military training area was created.
