Patricia Engel

Patricia Engel (* 1961 in Allentsteig ) is an Austrian restorer . Her focus is on the restoration of paper cultural assets , in particular historical books , graphics , maps and globes .

Live and act

Patricia Engel studied at the Master School for Conservation and Technology of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and at the University of Fine Arts in Dresden , where she took the degree in conservation and restoration of art and cultural assets. She graduated from the Vienna Academy in 1984 with a master's degree . She then worked as a restorer at the Austrian National Library in Vienna until 1988 , where she worked, among other things, in the map collection and in the globe museum , as well as in the overall restoration concept for the new globe museum.

In 1988 Engel moved to West Berlin , where she worked in the restoration department of the State Library of Prussian Cultural Heritage and, among other things, dealt with the restoration of graphics, posters and books. From 1989 she worked as a freelance restorer and took on orders from various churches and museums in Germany and Austria. Among other things, she worked as a course assistant at the two-month ICCROM Paper Conservation Course in the Lower Austrian town of Horn in 1991 .

In 1992, a cooperation with the Austrian Federal Monuments Office and other museums and libraries in Germany and Austria began. In 1996, 1997, 2000 and 2008 she had lectureships on the subjects of "restoration of maps" and "globe restoration" at the Swiss advanced training facility centro del bel libro in Ascona .

In 2000, Engel came to the HAWK University of Applied Sciences Hildesheim / Holzminden / Göttingen as part of a provisional administration professorship . At the University of Applied Sciences in Hildesheim , together with several workshop managers , she set up the newly offered study course "Conservation and Restoration of Books and Paper" and headed it until 2008. She taught the subjects "Restoration of Books and Paper" and "Historical Techniques" at the HAWK and advocated cooperation with the Belgian Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp , the Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen , with the Armenian Matenadaran Institute in Yerevan , with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing in Berlin and the Austrian Research Center Vestigia in Graz a.

In 2002, Engel was involved in the production of an instructional video for librarians and book lovers entitled On Handling Old Books . The educational film was presented to the public for the first time in August 2002 in the Hildesheim Cathedral Library , where part of the shooting also took place. A joint research carried out by the HAWK department “Conservation and Restoration” and the Hildesheim Cathedral Library uncovered a significant historical detail in a valuable Reichenau manuscript from the early 11th century, which in 2007 aroused interest in specialist circles. Engel, who is one of the few restorers experienced in restoring globes, also developed an e-learning course on the subject of globe restoration for the Hildesheim University of Applied Sciences , in which she cooperated with Michael Højlund Rasmussen from the Conservation Center Vejle in Denmark.

After Angels their first 2005 dissertation at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart had announced she was then in 2007 at the Academy of Fine Arts (Academy of Fine Pięknych) in Warsaw doctorate . Since completing her administration professorship in Hildesheim, Engel has been working as a freelance restorer again; Among other things, she restored a valuable document from 1521 for the Lower Austrian city of Zwettl at the end of 2008. In 2010 she became the scientific director of the newly founded European Research Center for Book and Paper Conservation-Restoration in Horn . In 2014 she moved to the Danube University Krems with this research activity .

Engel is committed to the conservation, restoration and maintenance of historically valuable paper cultural assets such as books, maps and globes. In doing so, she relies on “more prevention” and “less intervention” and advocates “minimal intervention”. The specialist specialist Reinhard Feldmann, who is also head of the main department “Manuscripts, Historical Collections, Conservation” of the University and State Library of Münster , counts Patricia Engel, along with Christian Beintker and Gerd Brinkhus, to the “leading restoration experts”.
