The Hildesheim Cathedral Library is a scientific library sponsored by the Hildesheim diocese . As the cathedral library , it has existed without interruption since the diocese was founded in 815. This makes it the oldest library in Northern Germany and, with over 120,000 volumes, some of which are of irreplaceable historical value.

The holdings are made up of several individual collections. While the original property of the cathedral church with its cathedral school was decimated several times by fires, came from the secularization mass of monasteries, from the former Jesuit college (now Gymnasium Josephinum ) and from parish and private collections - including the library of the chief forester pastor Martin Bever ( Beverina ) in 1681 and in 1908 the library of St. Godehard's Basilica - extensive and valuable holdings were added, which are continuously supplemented by bequests, donations and purchases.

In addition to the Albani Psalter , the Hildesheim Orational with miniatures from the Reichenau School of Painting is an important work in the holdings of the Hildesheim Cathedral Library .

Since 1997, the cathedral library has been housed in a new building on the cathedral courtyard , built according to modern conservation principles , which also offers comfortable reading rooms and public lending facilities.
